On Monday, they leaped into the top-two and will now be selecting in the top-four for the third-straight season. Two possible plans have opened for San Antonio with the No. 2 pick. Immediately, rumors spread about the possibility of a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. However, the opportunity to stick with the No. 2 pick and select a prospect is also on the table.

Spurs’ Plan to Select Dylan Harper With No. 2 Pick

Deserted Trade Pursuits

According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, trade pursuits have dried out and the Spurs have their eyes set on Rutgers guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick with the idea he can fit with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle.

ESPN draft expert says he's "99.9%" sure that Dylan Harper will be selected 2nd overall by the Spurs:

"They are not pursuing trades from what we're hearing. No one is denying he would be a phenomenal fit in San Antonio in the frontcourt with Victor Wembanyama. Just last season, the two stars combined for two steals and five blocks per game. The hypothetical duo would be one of the most defensively dominant the NBA has ever seen. However, with recent reports of the Bucks superstar preferring to remain in the Eastern Conference, any trade ideas involving Western Conference teams have dried up for now.

Fit in a Crowded Backcourt

Harper has been the consensus No. 2 prospect since the beginning of the collegiate season. In his freshman year at Rutgers, he averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. There was several games where he displaying his ability to take over games. It wouldn’t be a mistake for the Spurs congest their backcourt with the No. 2 pick. Overloading with talent is the best problem as they can construct their future core and find lineups with the most success.

The major concern in San Antonio will be the ability to spread deserving minutes around in the backcourt between three potential All-Star-caliber guards. San Antonio just recently acquired Fox at this year’s trade deadline to accelerate their rebuild around Wembanyama. On the other hand, after being selected No. 4 in the 2024 NBA Draft, Castle won the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year, averaging 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

Harper’s Lineage

The son of Hall of Fame point guard Ron Harper, Dylan Harper has untapped potential the Spurs can discover. His father played for the Chicago Bulls in the ’90s while his mother played college basketball at New Orleans. In addition, his older brother, Ron Harper Jr., played a stint for the Toronto Raptors. Growing up in a basketball family only benefits his case as the potential No. 2 pick and a great NBA pro who can fit on any team.

San Antonio’s Construction

San Antonio’s future is bright with their grasp of No. 2 and No. 14 picks in the 2025 NBA Draft. They’ve had back-to-back Rookie of the Year recipients and could end next season with a third. The Spurs are building a competitive team in a stacked Western Conference that has the potential to traverse the top of the conference soon.

© David Banks-Imagn Images

Entering the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, the San Antonio Spurs sat with the No. 8 odds to capture the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.
