The Lakers reportedly <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KeithSmithNBA\/status\/1919843068804575282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scheduled a pre-draft workout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with UConn&#8217;s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/samson-johnson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samson Johnson<\/span><\/a>. The 22-year-old <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">center contributed to the Huskies&#8217; last two national titles and became a starter his senior year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Two-Time UConn Champion First in Line for Lakers Draft Workouts<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What Johnson Brings to the Table<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After coming off the bench for the last three years (which included a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.ctinsider.com\/sports\/uconn-mens-basketball\/article\/samson-johnson-dan-hurley-march-madness-20236210.php\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foot injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during his sophomore campaign), Johnson started all 34 games he played in this season and left UConn as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/2025\/05\/11\/latest-projections-for-uconns-liam-mcneeley-before-nba-draft-combine-samson-johnson-receiving-buzz\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe winningest player in program history.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This year, he averaged 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and one assist per game while shooting 76% from both the field and the free-throw line. When questioned about Johnson\u2019s starting spot, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/uconn\/basketball\/uconn-s-dan-hurley-explains-why-samson-johnson-starts-you-need-warriors-colin3\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">head coach Dan Hurley responded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cYou need warriors on the court.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;That kid is like one of my favorite players I&#8217;ve ever coached,\u201d he added. \u201cYou know, weighing 210 [pounds] basically \u2026 he&#8217;s just giving you absolutely everything [he\u2019s] got, and that&#8217;s why he starts [games], and that&#8217;s why I trust him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not being invited to the Draft Combine or G League Showcase, the Hartford Courant reported he played at the Portsmouth Invitational in April, averaging 7.3 points and 6.7 rebounds on 56.3% shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson has been <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nbascoutinglive.com\/samson-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heralded for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his athleticism, motor, and defense, all of which he displayed in increased minutes under Hurley. Defensively, he\u2019s a solid shot blocker, recording the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/schools\/connecticut\/men\/2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third-most swats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per game for the Huskies this season. On the other side, scored <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kNQONUFyxkw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most of his points off of rolls and lobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, moving well off the ball to get himself open. The 22-year-old also proved to be an adequate rebounder for his size, even if some of the boards came on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MalikG\/status\/1904296996560908454\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(very) questionable plays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his promise, scouts are <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/motorcyclesports.net\/jazz-eye-uconns-samson-johnson-as-pre-draft-workouts-spark-interest-from-multiple-nba-teams-in-a-potential-game-changing-pick\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of his limited offensive game, particularly his shooting, as well as his need to add some low post moves to his arsenal. He has even received <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/fanspo.com\/nba\/draft-prospects\/samson-johnson\/4683752\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comparisons to a current Laker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: two-way big man <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kolokch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Koloko<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson\u2019s athleticism should excite Laker fans as someone who can thrive on both ends of the floor. The team notoriously lacked bigs who could match opponents\u2019 size and strength toward the end of the season and in the playoffs. The senior could help the Lakers in those regards and can develop into a rotation quality big man. Conversely, Doncic, James and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would benefit from having another lob threat on the roster. The Lakers would also love reinforcements on rebounding and defense\u2014considering their regular-season finishes of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/traditional?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=REB\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26th in boards per game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/traditional?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=BLK\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22nd in blocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and Johnson could patch those holes as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to centers the Lakers could draft, Samson Johnson should be near the top of the list.
