Boston was widely expected to dominate this series, however, they ended up losing 108-105 in overtime in a game where they missed the most threes (45) in playoff history. The Celtics also blew a 20-point lead.

However, Jrue Holiday was one of the few bright spots for the Celtics. Notably, Holiday missed the final three games of the Celtics’ first-round series against the Orlando Magic with a hamstring injury. Upon returning, Holiday showed no signs that his injury was slowing him down and delivered a stellar, well-rounded performance. Let’s dive into Holiday’s play and his overall importance to the Celtics.

Jrue Holiday’s Impact Evident in Return Game Despite Unfortunate Loss

Holiday’s Incredible All-Around Impact

Holiday posted 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists. On 7-14 shooting, he was also Boston’s most efficient source of offense on a night when the team shot 35.1 percent from the field. In the fourth quarter, Holiday grabbed three clutch rebounds and did everything he could to help the Celtics win. He also had a crucial cutting layup to tie the game with under a minute left. In games when the Celtics’ shots aren’t falling, they should utilize Holiday as a cutter and screener more often to help balance their shot diet. Additionally, when the lights are the brightest, Holiday often raises his level of play and always makes winning plays. Holiday’s backcourt mate, Derrick White, also made several clutch plays.

The most important aspect of Holiday’s game was his lockdown defense on Jalen Brunson. He served as the primary defender on Brunson, holding him to 2-of-8 shooting. Holiday’s size, strength, and discipline make him the perfect defender on Brunson. While the Celtics will throw different looks at Brunson, including White and Brown, it’s clear Holiday is best equipped to guard him. The Celtics trusted Holiday guarding Brunson more than anyone else, as his 31.8 possessions on Brunson were the most, with White’s 16.5 next up.

May 5, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) drives the ball against Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday (4) in the first quarter during game one of the second round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at TD Garden. In the two games Holiday played last series, he held Paolo Banchero to 20 percent shooting, showcasing his versatility. Undoubtedly, head coach Joe Mazzulla will deploy schemes where Holiday guards Karl-Anthony Towns. Holiday’s elite on-ball perimeter defense and versatility make him one of the best defenders in the league.

While the Celtics are down 0-1, there shouldn’t be too much concern, as they won’t shoot this poorly again. Furthermore, Holiday’s defense and well-rounded impact are key to the Celtics’ success. He also always makes the little plays that lead to winning. Despite only shooting 2-7 from three in Game 1, look for Holiday to make an impact as a spot-up shooter as the series continues. Ultimately, the Celtics are poised to bounce back in this series, and Holiday’s two-way play will be a significant factor.

Featured image: © John Jones-Imagn Images

The Boston Celtics dropped Game 1 of their series against the New York Knicks.
