He finished the last game against the Boston Celtics with 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Since then, he has been out with a blood clot diagnosis. Now, a viral video shows that the Spurs organization can relax a bit. Wemby is fine, and he looks ready to come back to the court next season and dominate.

Viral Wemby Video Sparks Optimism Within Spurs Organization

When you are seven feet tall, people will notice you wherever you go. Maybe if it wasn’t that tall, Victor might have gone unnoticed. But because of his height, Wemby stands too tall in a viral video playing soccer with kids in Costa Rica. The Spurs star had some nice moves and, after the game, took photos with the kids.

Victor Wembanyama’s Recovery

Wemby was diagnosed with blood clots in mid-February. Usually, players with a blood clot diagnosis have to take blood-thinning medications for 90 days. Damian Lillard recently changed the rules, coming back after one month of recovery.

Right now, Wemby should be two and a half months into his recovery period. Doctors often recommend that players avoid contact sports while taking blood-thinning medications. But if Wemby is playing soccer, he is probably off blood-thinning medications. So far, the Spurs haven’t announced anything regarding the recovery of their young star. But they could surely be happy with Wemby looking as healthy and springy as ever.

Wemby Might Have a Busy Summer

Earlier in April, Wembanyama talked about his desire to represent France at the EuroBasket. The European basketball competition will take place in several countries from August 27th to September 14th. Speaking recently about the possibility, he said,

“I don’t know if it’s realistic, there are a lot of uncertainties. Planning ahead wouldn’t be relevant at all, but I obviously want to play for the French national team at every international competition I can. I have a vague idea, but it’s such a specific problem. I will have to take a little time because I want to be sure of my decision in the end.”

Wemby has a bit more time to make a decision. Preparation for the competition might not start until late July. By then, he will pass the 90-day usual period of blood-thinning medications. The Spurs, as an organization, have always allowed their international players to compete at the highest level in international competitions. But Wemby is in a specific situation.

Time for Wemby and Spurs to Make Improvements

The Spurs made a series of moves last year to give their team a chance to compete in the playoffs. At the February trade deadline, they made a move for De’Aaron Fox. In the summer, they got Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes. This year, they will have two lottery picks. Right now, they are projected to pick at No.8 and No.14. But things can change after the lottery.

They will be under the salary cap for next season and might be able to get another free agent to join the team, but they will have several free agents on their team. Right now, they have $145 million in salary for the 2025-26 season, with the cap set at $154 million and the luxury tax at $187 million. But their biggest improvement will be Victor coming back healthy and ready to go. Judging by the latest viral video of Wemby, their franchise center is ready to go.

Photo credit: © Scott Wachter-Imagn Images

Victor Wembanyama hasn’t played in an NBA game since February 12th.
