Detroit dropped both games at Little Caesars Arena, falling by two points in Game 3 and by a single, gut-wrenching point Sunday afternoon after a controversial no-call on Tim Hardaway Jr.’s three-point attempt. Cade Cunningham led the way with a 25-point triple-double, while Tobias Harris added 18 points and eight rebounds.

While the officiating missed a critical call, the truth is simple: the Pistons let this one slip away. Up by ten with ten minutes left, the Pistons crumbled under pressure. Turnovers, defensive breakdowns, and late-game shot-making from Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns proved too much to survive.

With their backs against the wall, the Pistons head to Madison Square Garden facing elimination. What went wrong down the stretch? And how did Detroit fans, despite the heartbreak, remind the nation what playoff basketball sounds like in the Motor City? Let’s dive in.

Heartbreak Hits, But Pistons’ Spirit Won’t Break

Where’s Malik Beasley?

Sharpshooter Malik Beasley was one player expected to be an X-factor for the Pistons this series. After finishing the 2024-25 season second in three-pointers made behind Anthony Edwards, Beasley entered the playoffs with something to prove. He flashed his shooting prowess in Game 1, knocking down 6 of 12 from deep, but it’s been a different story since then.

Over the past three games, Beasley has gone just 6-for-27 from beyond the arc. His hot hand often fuels Detroit’s offense when he’s hitting shots, the Pistons’ floor spacing and rhythm thrive. When he’s cold, defenses sag off, clogging driving lanes and daring others to beat them. If the Pistons hope to claw back into this series, they’ll need Beasley to find his stroke and fast.

Stewart’s Impact

When fans outside Detroit ask, “What does Isaiah Stewart do besides get into confrontations?” — his absence in this series tells you everything you need to know. Stewart is one of the best defensive bigs in the NBA, and the Pistons felt his loss against Towns. In his two games in Detroit, Towns dominated, particularly from beyond the arc, where he went a blistering 9-for-15. Without Stewart, the Pistons had no answer.

Jalen Duren has the size to match Towns, but struggles with his quickness. While in the game, Harris didn’t have the size to contest effectively. Paul Reed battled hard but couldn’t match Towns’ combination of skill and physicality. Towns found a way to exploit whoever the Pistons threw at him.

Would Stewart have shut Towns down completely? Probably not. Towns is too talented. But his touches and rhythm would have been much harder with Stewart’s physicality, defensive footwork, and toughness.

Pistons Fans Bring The Fire, Even Through Heartbreak

Forget the final scores — Little Caesars Arena was alive, and the Knicks felt it. From the opening tip, Pistons’ fans were on their feet, booing every Brunson touch, barking at the refs, and making sure everyone in the building knew whose city this was.

It’s been a long time since playoff basketball has been relevant in Detroit, and you could feel that hunger in every chant, every roar, every whistle that didn’t go the Pistons’ way. For too long, the world only got glimpses of this fire when a big-name team came to town — or when the Lions lit up Ford Field less than a mile away. Not anymore. The lights are back on for the Pistons — win or lose, this city’s voice is louder than ever.

The Last Word

The road ahead won’t be easy. Down 3–1, heading into Madison Square Garden, with everything stacked against them, this is where most teams break. But not Detroit. Not this team. Not this city.

The Pistons have taken every punch and are still standing. If they want to keep fighting, it starts with the heart. It starts with pride. It begins with believing there’s still one more run left in them. This Detroit Pistons team was built on toughness, grit, and never backing down. This series isn’t over until someone rips it away and the Pistons still have a say in how they face elimination.

Photo credit: © David Reginek-Imagn Images

After six long years of waiting, Detroit Pistons fans finally got their playoff moment at home — and left with heartbreak instead.
