The team announced Friday that Pelinka will assume the role of President of Basketball Operations in addition to his current standing as GM.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Rob Pelinka to a contract extension, with his new title as president of basketball operations along with general manager, sources tell ESPN. Lakers leadership is now signed long-term with Pelinka and coach JJ Redick. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BCpZNgxCzE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/BCpZNgxCzE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/1913310362482663627?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 18, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Extend, Promote Rob Pelinka<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>A Well-Deserved Extension<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a press release, Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss praised Pelinka for his leadership and vision in a role he took on in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor eight seasons, I have relied on Rob&#8217;s vision and leadership to do what&#8217;s best for the Lakers organization,\u201d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jovanbuha\/status\/1913311640629678563?s=46&amp;t=K2EEPguKvvUj2h4oW6grHw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;I value his partnership and professionalism and believe in his ability to deliver championship-caliber basketball for Los Angeles and Lakers fans everywhere.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some past hiccups, Pelinka has shown he\u2019s the right executive to continually lead the Lakers into the future, especially one headlined by <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His past acquisition of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a> trade<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> propelled the Lakers toward their 17th title, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ClutchPoints\/status\/1913357635572941305\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bold risks<\/a> like the Doncic trade proved his willingness to shake up the roster to reach that level of excellence once more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/04\/15\/lakers-playoffs-x-factors\/\" target=\"_self\">2025 playoffs<\/a> shake out, Pelinka will have yet another opportunity to maximize LA\u2019s current title window with successful offseason moves. James currently has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/03\/28\/lakers-lebron-james-player-option-likely-decision\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$52.6 million player option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the table, though he could decline it and re-sign on a team-friendly contract. If he does so, it\u2019s up to the seasoned executive to bring in talented rotation players that fit the current iteration of the Lakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 commitment to Pelinka is laudable and a positive step in the right direction, particularly for a franchise that prides itself on past excellence. Fans no longer need to question whether he is still the right man to lead the Lakers, but can only hope his future moves lead to sustained excellence for the purple and gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Gary A.
