It was a prime opportunity for LA to make their third seed dreams a reality. Then, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was ejected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doncic, known as much for his competitive nature as his elite scoring, nailed a two-point jumper to give LA the lead when he responded to a heckling Thunder fan sitting courtside. Referee J.T. Orr, who was caught in the crossfire, promptly <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6265843\/2025\/04\/08\/luka-doncic-ejected-lakers-lose-to-thunder\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued a technical on Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Luka\u2019s second of the game, sending him to the showers in the heat of a crucial battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The league-leading <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UnderdogNBA\/status\/1909802318884921633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thunder outscored the Lakers 29-12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from that point on, handing LA a 136-120 loss behind <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s 42 points. Doncic\u2019s controversial ejection has raised questions over the rough state of NBA officiating and whether a similar situation could harm LA in the playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Luka Doncic Ejection Could Affect Lakers Playoffs and NBA Officiating<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Reaction to Luka Doncic\u2019s Ejection<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head coach JJ Redick seemed to call out Orr in his postgame press conference, hinting that call changed the game&#8217;s trajectory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It was a great game that, unfortunately, didn&#8217;t get to sort of finish out the way that I think every basketball fan would want because of some decision making on some individuals\u2019 parts,&#8221; <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LakersNation\/status\/1909799483216740355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doncic explained his side of the story postgame. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI never got a fan ejected, never,&#8221; <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jovanbuha\/status\/1909808137000870124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he said<\/a>. But when you talk, I\u2019m gonna talk back, always. It had nothing to do with the ref. I didn\u2019t really understand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted that Doncic\u2019s ejection led to \u201ca weird couple of minutes\u201d afterward. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know why the ref was taking it personal,\u201d he <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DStarkand\/status\/1909802733185777851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">added<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Thunder Fan\u2019s Perspective<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN\u2019s Dave McMenamin tracked down the Thunder fan Doncic fired back at: Jeremy Price, who has a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mcten\/status\/1909801875308003753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">history of talking trash to Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dating back to last year\u2019s playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring the game within the game, I mentioned that he was short and he missed it and he turned around and he shot an explicative [sic] back and J.T. [Orr] happened to see it and that point, T\u2019d him up,&#8221; <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mcten\/status\/1909801223122747602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Price told McMenamin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked if Orr thought Luka\u2019s remarks were aimed at him instead, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mcten\/status\/1909801525402366311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Price acknowledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it could be a possibility, appearing to echo criticisms by Redick, James and a multitude of fans in the incident\u2019s aftermath.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Adding Fuel to the Officiating Fire<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doncic\u2019s ejection is the latest in a series of seemingly soft ejections as of late. Amid a down-to-the-wire contest between the Lakers and Thunder, the call completely swung the momentum in OKC\u2019s direction. It took the fire away from the Lakers and, to an extent, the game as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">J.T. Orr needs to be fined for that egregious ejection. Completely swayed the game\u2019s momentum. However, the incident highlights continued controversy around the state of NBA officiating. Other stars were ejected for less egregious offenses (e.g. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jayson Tatum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/985thesportshub.com\/2025\/04\/04\/jayson-tatum-technical-foul-rescind\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arguing with a ref<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edwaran01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Edwards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/timberwolves-edwards-16th-technical-foul\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spiking a ball into the stands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Doncic\u2019s case is not only unjust in the eyes of fans, but also arguably the main reason the game shifted the way it did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The critiques around officiating also come just in time for the playoffs, when refs\u2019 decisions could sway games in pivotal moments. This ejection, among others, should serve as a checkpoint for the league and its officials, whose calls (or lack thereof) could make or break the outcome of a series, especially with several star-powered teams vying for a championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Doncic&#8217;s Behavior Could Cost Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, as Tuesday night\u2019s incident proved, <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_JasonLT\/status\/1909811879754797471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doncic<\/a>\u2019s trash talking is only tolerable for so long. In a postseason environment filled with high stakes and higher emotions, there\u2019s always a chance a similar situation could unfold. That&#8217;s something Doncic and the Lakers cannot afford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every official may come to a swift decision like Orr did. Still, Luka\u2019s behavior could still lead to momentum-killing techs for himself and the team. The NBA allows up to 16 technical fouls before a player serves a one-game suspension. Doncic is already at nine techs with the Lakers and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/thunder\/2025\/04\/08\/luka-doncic-ejected-from-lakers-vs-thunder-after-second-technical-foul\/83002561007\/#:~:text=Doncic%20picked%20up%20his%20first,receiving%20a%20one%2Dgame%20suspension.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 on the season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers and Doncic should hope that his future smack talk doesn\u2019t bite them in the playoffs. While the team may be capable of performing without Luka, doing so after his ejection was far from ideal. The purple and gold don\u2019t want to scramble in a postseason series where every choice is magnified.
