The Warriors went and got Jimmy Butler in a trade. Since then, they have slowly climbed up in the Western Conference standings. With Butler on the team, Green can take more responsibilities on the defensive end. Over the last month or so, the four-time champion has talked a lot about winning a Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award. Slowly, he is becoming the favorite to win the award.

Draymond Green Highlights Play that Makes Him a DPOY Favorite

Victor Wembanyama had the Defensive Player of the Year award locked in for the first several months. Then, he got hurt, and his season was over. Because of the new rules in the league, players need to play a minimum of 65 games to be eligible for some awards. That is when the window opened for Draymond Green to win DPOY, or somebody else.

Green has been vocal for quite some time about his desire to win another Defensive Player of the Year. In his latest podcast, he talked about specific plays that make him a favorite. Baron Davis asked him about a recent steal on Luka Doncic during the Warriors/Lakers game, and Green said,

“It’s like a Heisman moment. It’s always fun to make those plays down the stretch because the reality is, they usually come on a Luka, or a Joker, because those are the guys that are going to have the ball down the stretch. I am always looking for that moment because it’s my chance for a winning play.”

Taking Responsibility on the Defensive End

Green talked about how players like Steph Curry and Butler might get the chance for a winning shot down the stretch. But he is the one that makes winning plays on the defensive end, saying that is how he can win a game. Speaking about the specific play, he said,

“When Luka drove in, I was watching the whole time, waiting for him to see if he was going to expose the ball. Because if he exposed the ball, I’m going for it. And in those situations, like, I’m going to go for it in a way where if I foul, you’re just going to the line for two free throws. I’m always looking for that opportunity because I feel like as a defender, that’s the Holy Grail, that’s your Heisman moment, that’s your game-winning shot.”

Can Draymond Win DPOY?

According to the latest odds by Fox Sports, Draymond Green is the favorite to win the DPOY. Jaren Jackson Jr has fallen off the betting odds, because he has missed some time and the Grizzlies are not playing well.

Draymond benefits from a strong push after the All-Star break. The Warriors have been rolling with Butler in the lineup, and Draymond can focus on what he does best, defend.

According to the latest odds, Draymond is at -165 to win the award, followed by Evan Mobley at +190 and Lu Dort at +850. If Green wins it, it will be his second Defensive Player of the Year award.

A center or a power forward has won the award 17 times in the last 20 seasons. The only exceptions are Kawhi Leonard in back-to-back years and Marcus Smart in 2021-22. Green might not have the individual defensive rating numbers of players like Dort, Mobley, and Jackson Jr., but he makes plays that count.

Photo credit: © Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images

Draymond Green has been quite vocal since the All-Star break.
