When the Pistons drafted\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cunnica01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cade Cunningham<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who made his first all-star appearance this season, it was the best thing to happen to them since their championship run in 2008. It seems like forever ago that\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/billuch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chauncey Billups<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wallabe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ben Wallace<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0led the recently moribund franchise to that title, and that&#8217;s because it really was forever ago. Since then, Detroit <em>has<\/em> been a moribund franchise\u2014irrelevant and uncompetitive\u2014until now. Cunningham is the leading element in the changing of the winds in the Motor City. That said, he wants to be known for being far more significant than what he has achieved thus far, far more significant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Cade Cunningham Desires Recognition Beyond All-Star Selections<\/h2>\n<h3>Detroit Pistons Rising All-Star Cade Cunningham Believes He&#8217;s &#8216;On His Way&#8217; to Being the Best Player In the World<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Believe it or not, Cunningham was at one point considered a possible bust after being drafted in 2021. He came into his rookie season with great expectations, and at least statistically speaking, he didn&#8217;t disappoint. After his first season, Cunningham suffered a significant injury that knocked him out of the majority of the 2022-23 season. He played in just 12 games. The following year, he bounced back, playing 62 games and averaging a career-high 22.7 PPG. Unfortunately, the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/04\/01\/nba-suspends-five-players-pistons-timberwolves\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pistons<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0were <em>still<\/em> moribund and experienced arguably their worst season in franchise history. Questions around Cunningham&#8217;s abilities to take a franchise upon his back and change it for the better surfaced. As far as everyone was concerned, as great a gifting and talent Cunningham possessed, Detroit continued to flounder in the basement of the East.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Suffice it to say that things are different now. Cunningham has the Pistons on track to being a prominent and formidable opponent in the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/03\/28\/philadelphia-76ers-taylor-jenkins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eastern Conference<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for years to come. A coaching change involving bringing J.B. Bickerstaff in has helped instrumentally, but Cunningham is the driving force. He wants more than all-star appearances and winning seasons above .500, though. Yes, he wants to be recognized for something more ambitious, and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/44480553\/cade-cunningham-eyeing-more-success-detroit-pistons-most-improved-player\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he spoke about it with Eric Woodyard in a recent ESPN feature<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think I can be the best basketball player in the world. I think I\u2019m on my way,\u00a0<\/em><em>I want people to understand that and that\u2019s what I\u2019m working to show people every time I play.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Part of the New Crop<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at the point in his career where he can now see over the fence to the other side\u2014<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Steph Curry<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kevin Durant<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0joining him\u2014a new crop of NBA superstars is breaking through. Cunningham is unquestionably one of them, along with several others. For now, the &#8220;best player in the world&#8221; title resides within\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nikola Joki\u0107<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;s embodiment. Before Cunningham has a chance at that title, many will say\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edwaran01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Anthony Edwards<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have a closer, more legitimate claim. Cunningham doesn&#8217;t appear bothered by anything, though. He believes he has the potential to hold the same claim SGA and Antman will eventually have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As he sees it, he&#8217;s on his way, and frankly, he and the Pistons are presenting a strong case. All Cunningham needs is true playoff success over the course of the next few years. It&#8217;s why Joki\u0107 holds the claim of the world&#8217;s best player over Gilgeous-Alexander and Edwards\u2014playoff success and a title to go with his remarkably unstoppable game. A new crop is rising in the league, and Cunningham is a part of it. If he wants to be seen as the best, he&#8217;ll have to win like the best.
