{"id":13137,"date":"2018-02-21T18:19:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T23:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=13137"},"modified":"2018-02-22T10:12:23","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T15:12:23","slug":"report-mavericks-unhealthy-workplace-exposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2018\/02\/21\/report-mavericks-unhealthy-workplace-exposed\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Dallas Mavericks Unhealthy Work Place Exposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/dallas-mavericks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Mavericks<\/a> organization has been exposed for having a corrosive workplace culture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/2018\/02\/20\/dallas-mavericks-sexual-misconduct-investigation-mark-cuban-response\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to a report by Jon Wertheim and Jessica Luther of Sports Illustrated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The magazine interviewed more than a dozen current and ex-employees during a &#8220;months-long&#8221; Sports Illustrated investigation. SI says these interviews &#8220;paint a picture of a corporate culture rife with misogyny and predatory sexual behavior.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Report: Dallas Mavericks Unhealthy Work Place Exposed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The allegations detailed in the report include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Public fondling by team president and CEO\u00a0Terdema Ussery, who left the team in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Domestic assault by former Mavericks.com reporter\u00a0Earl K. Sneed.<\/li>\n<li>Employees conducting themselves in an inappropriate\u00a0manner, including one who watched pornography in the open, received\u00a0&#8220;unsupportive or even intimidating responses from superiors.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In the report, SI said a half-dozen female sources who worked for the Mavericks or American Airlines Center, where the team plays, left as a result of &#8220;a work environment and structure that left them feeling vulnerable and devalued.&#8221; At the same time, the report says the organization continued\u00a0to protect men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Responses to the Report<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t feel safe going to work and it\u2019s not long before you look for another job,\u201d one woman told SI. \u201cAnd then you wonder why there aren\u2019t more women working in sports. Really?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Since the report came out, Cuban said he is going to make changes but also acknowledged that he decided to allow Snead to keep covering the team twice after separate\u00a0domestic violence incidents, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/22531647\/dallas-mavericks-owner-mark-cuban-says-blame-keeping-former-employee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to a report by ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to be clear, I&#8217;m not putting the blame on anybody else,&#8221; Cuban said to ESPN. &#8220;It came down to my final decision that I made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An investigation is being conducted, but the Mavericks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mavs.com\/statement-from-dallas-mavericks-on-sports-illustrated-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released a statement<\/a> about the incident and the allegations against Ussery specifically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This individual left the employment of the Mavericks nearly three years ago and the Mavericks have only learned of the scope of these complaints in the past days,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nba.com\/article\/2018\/02\/20\/nba-release-statement-si-story-regarding-dallas-mavericks-official-release#\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBA also released<\/a> the following statement on the incident:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe Dallas Mavericks have informed us of the allegations involving former team president\u00a0Terdema\u00a0Ussery and\u00a0Mavs.com writer Earl Sneed. \u00a0This alleged conduct runs counter to\u00a0the\u00a0steadfast commitment\u00a0of the NBA and its teams\u00a0to foster\u00a0safe, respectful and welcoming workplaces\u00a0for all employees.\u00a0\u00a0Such behavior is completely unacceptable and we\u00a0will closely monitor the independent investigation into this matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Stay with Last Word on Pro Basketball for updates to this story.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mavericks unhealthy workplace was exposed in a report by Sports Illustrated on Tuesday.
