I can do a little bit of everything — pass, rebound, sit down and switch onto guards. Read plays and come from the weak side for blocks. I have a good touch. A feel for the game. But the main thing is to try and help my team win. Everyone says they want to be like [Nikola] Jokic. I also like to watch Bam Adebayo. His hustle, the way he’s expanded his game and switches from 1 to 5.”

Let’s dive into his self-evaluation.

Thomas Sorber Scouting Report

By The Numbers

From just a statistical standpoint, the former four-star recruit has numbers comparisons comparable to projected lottery picks.

In 2024-25, Sorber averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. He wasn’t particularly accurate beyond the arc, but he managed to convert six 3-pointers; as many as Maryland freshman Derik Queen and one more than Duke freshman Khaman Maluach (4). Sorber’s defensive box plus-minus (4.4) was higher than that of Queen (4.3) and Maluach (3.5) as well.

His counting stats are better than Maluach’s across the board. Between he and Queen, who has started to be mocked in the top-10, there’s less than a 10 percent difference between their scoring and rebounding averages. He also a much higher block rate (7.6 percent) than Queen (3.9 percent).

Film Study

On film, he possesses a dynamic skillset that backs up those numbers.

He’s an inside-outside scorer with his a face-up game to match. He can force the issue, taking more than what the defense gives him. However, he’s not a black hole on offense and he doesn’t usually bite off more than he can chew.

He also processes the court well, making smart and nifty passes. At worst, coaches will acknowledge his playmaking ability expect to make winning plays. At best, his decision-making and upside as a facilitator lends itself to his chance of becoming an offensive hub.

Frankly, he should be able to do at least as much as Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun. Sengun, who earned his first All-Star nod this season, has been compared to Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic. That isn’t to say Sorber will be a three-time NBA MVP one day. Nevertheless, that’s the center tree that he belongs too.

At the same time, he’s got an opportunity to be a far better defender than either Jokic or Sengun. He’s more mobile, particularly in space. He’s also a much better shot-blocker than Sengun or Jokic.

From every angle, Sorber looks like a lottery prospect. NBA scouts weren’t singing his praises until midway through the season. But unless their boards are set in stone, there’s no objective reason for him not to be in that conversation.

© Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images

Georgetown freshman center Thomas Sorber “has hired an agent and will declare for the 2025 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility,” per ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony.
