Following a shocking upset defeat to McNeese on Thursday, Clemson began to look towards the future. Unfortunately, that future will be without one of their key starters. Chauncey Wiggins entered the transfer portal on Monday. Wiggins makes the third key ACC player to enter the transfer portal on the opening day, but the first to leave without a coaching change. So what’s next for Chauncey Wiggins? Is he searching for a better option than Clemson despite their recent success? What kind of programs would want a player like Wiggins? Let’s dive in.

Key Starter Chauncey Wiggins Leaves Clemson for Transfer Portal

Is There a Better Option for Chauncey Wiggins in the Transfer Portal?

Some players deserve to have a bigger role than they have, so they leave their program. Others are carrying a smaller program and want to be on a more national stage. Neither of those reasons necessarily apply to Wiggins. Don’t get me wrong: Wiggins was a key contributor for Clemson this season. However, he had a set role that he played very well. He was a good three-point shooter for his incredible size and length. He helped create mismatches on both sides of the ball and played a key role in Clemson finishing the season with a top-30 offense and defense according to KenPom. Wiggins is a great player who played very well within Brad Brownell’s system.

So, what is he hoping to achieve? Only he knows the answer to that question. However, I find it hard to believe there will be options in the transfer portal for Wiggins that will benefit him any better than Clemson would. If he is looking for a larger offensive role, he may have to transfer to a smaller school to achieve that. If he is looking for a championship, he may have to play fewer minutes on a contending team. He fit so well within the system unless he was unwanted or there was a specific reason for wanting out of Clemson; I’m not sure the move will be that beneficial. NIL could also be the leading factor.

What Kind of Program Would Want Him?

He has the size and athleticism to play some minutes at any school, so this is a tough question. However, I think one school would fit Chauncey Wiggins better than most: Duke. It wouldn’t be the first time a key player left his school to try and win it all for a rival. Wiggins has exactly what Duke likes in players. He is 6-foot-10, shoots 36% from three, and helps minimize passing lanes on defense. If you look at the whole Duke roster, they’re filled with players exactly like that. If Wiggins is looking to play on a national championship contender, Duke is a logical choice.

However, other programs would desire his shooting ability at his height, too. Like the Isaac McKneely transfer earlier on Monday, teams like UConn and St. John’s would love to add a player with that size and athleticism that can shoot the three. Whether he wants to go there, and whether they would want to give him quality minutes, remains to be seen.

The Last Word

Wiggins will be a key piece to any transfer portal class he signs with. He isn’t a superstar, but he was a key player on a good Clemson squad. He will have a very important decision to make for his career. If he can get a larger role and shine, it could end up being a great move. However, a wrong signing could make the end of his college career less than enjoyable after success at Clemson.

Photo credit: © Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images

It hasn’t been a great week for the Clemson Tigers.
