Ben Johnson tried to give everything he had to his alma mater as coach, but it wasn’t enough. Coach Johnson was fired by the University of Minnesota.

It seemed like this was a possibility, despite Johnson doing everything he could with what the team had. It appears that Coach Johnson didn’t have a room to succeed. That might not be the biggest issue for Minnesota, though, as the leadership at the school doesn’t appear to know when it has something good. Sure, Minnesota never reached the NCAA Tournament with Ben Johnson at the helm, but he did some good work for not having the pieces or support from the school throughout his tenure.

Minnesota Makes Decision on Ben Johnson, But They Have Bigger Problems

Minnesota has had one decent season in the last five-plus years. Not to mention, they have only made the NCAA Tournament twice in the last 10 years. Both these appearances came under the guidance of Richard Pitino, who was let go before Johnson got the job. You’re talking about a program that relived legendary coach Tubby Smith, after he got Minnesota to the second-round in 2013. That is the farthest the Gophers have reached in the Big Dance in decades. It was only matched by Pitino in 2019.

It’s pretty clear that no matter who helms the sidelines, Minnesota doesn’t have the right people in charge at a higher level. It was even more clear when the Gophers made the news official that Ben Johnson was fired at 2:19 am ET. The firing came less than 24 hours after the Gophers lost in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Minnesota Athletic Director Mark Coyle released a statement on the decision, citing that the Gophers weren’t competing at the level expected of them.

Director of Athletics Mark Coyle Announces Head Coaching Leadership Change. https://t.co/f6lJlNaFTo pic.twitter.com/CQ5VxVdrCH

— Minnesota Men's Basketball (@GopherMBB) March 13, 2025

“These decisions are difficult and are made after careful consideration and evaluation. The expectation for our program is to compete for championships, and unfortunately, we have not done that in the last four years,” Coyle said via a press release.

That’s quite a statement, given Minnesota hasn’t competed for a Championship over twenty years.

If You Can’t Keep Talent, You’re in Trouble

Minnesota has had some strong talent in Minneapolis over the last several years, and the Ben Johnson tenure was no different. Their biggest problem was keeping the talent around. Johnson’s biggest issue was the transfer portal. The Gophers had their best season in 2023-24 under Johnson as they finished with a 19-15 record.

That team was able to reach the NIT. They also had some big-time players, including Cam Christie, along with an really good point guard in Elijah Hawkins. Not to mention Pharrel Payne was coming into his own. Not to mention they had an All-Big Ten player in Dawson Garcia. Too bad they couldn’t keep all of those players in Minneapolis.

Christie went to the NBA, which is why not. But losing Payne and Hawkins to the transfer portal is certainly what killed any momentum the Gophers had built last year. Garcia returned and once again delivered, but if he had Hawkins at the least alongside him this season, maybe things would’ve gone differently.

It’s clear that Minnesota lacks the resources to keep talent in Minneapolis, and that isn’t going to change under their current leadership at the top. It wasn’t Ben Johnson’s fault that the guys left. If you can’t keep talent in the NIL and transfer portal era, you’re in trouble.

© Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images

Despite fighting hard all season and finishing well above preseason expectations, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have made a decision. The future of their head coach.
