The 14-year veteran was initially playing under a pair of 10-day contracts. However, with the league only permitting teams to sign a player to two 10-day deals maximum, the Spurs were forced to decide between letting the big man walk away or sticking with him.

NBA Veteran Bismack Biyombo Will Stay With Spurs

According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the Spurs chose the latter.

In Biyombo’s last three games, he’s been averaging 8.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per contest. This includes two double-doubles, both against the New Orleans Pelicans.

San Antonio Spurs will sign center Bismack Biyombo for remainder of the season following the conclusion of his second 10-day contract, league source tell me. He’s also shooting 66.7 percent from the field, the highest mark in San Antonio’s current rotation. Perhaps most importantly, he’s started every game since Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Make no mistake, Biyombo and Wembanyama are completely different players on offense. Even so, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson couldn’t help but commend the big man for his impact around the rim. Given the way that guards can thrive with a solid screener and pick-and-roll partner, he’s a simple but effective offensive weapon.

Defensively, there’s a bit more similarity between Biyombo and Wembanyama. Despite being just 6-foot-8, Biyombo is a determined rim-protector. Because of his experience and mentality, he doesn’t shy away from communicating either. So, though he doesn’t have all the ideal tangibles, his intangibles allow him to compensate.

After remaining unsigned throughout the first two-thirds of the NBA season, Bismack Biyombo has impressed the San Antonio Spurs enough to earn a standard contract.
