Since hiring Leon Rose in March of 2020, New York has gone through five trade deadlines. 2025 was the first time they made zero meaningful moves. Rather than sparking frustration with their silence, it should be a marker of the newfound competence of the organization. It also reminds fans that after two long decades of struggle, the Knicks are finally where they want to be.

NY has a core of players who have the team in true championship contention and should be around for years. They have a chance to hoist the trophy this season and many seasons after that. With that said, New York had a small window to improve the roster, and instead stood pat, a show of confidence in their group. Here’s what a healthy Knicks rotation looks like after a quiet trade deadline.

What a Healthy Knicks Rotation Looks Like Post-Deadline

Rose’s only move was to send fourth-year center Jericho Sims to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for veteran guard Delon Wright. Sims was redundant on a roster with Karl-Anthony Towns, Mitchell Robinson, Ariel Hukporti, and Precious Achiuwa receiving center minutes. Wright is an experienced two-way player and should provide emergency guard depth if injuries hit. New York is counting on the timely returns of Robinson and OG Anunoby, perhaps after the All-Star break. Tom Thibodeau has been playing a nine-man rotation for nearly three weeks, and it has worked wonders for the team’s energy. For the sake of this article, we’ll map out a ten-man group.

Robinson Rounds Out The Second Unit

Mitchell Robinson’s return to the floor gives the Knicks eleven healthy bodies (assuming Anunoby also recovers) that Thibodeau has confidence in. The starting five: Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, Anunoby, and Towns. He also trusts (at least at times): Deuce McBride, Cameron Payne, Landry Shamet, Achiuwa, Robinson, and Hukporti. Tyler Kolek and Pacome Dadiet have yet to earn consistent playing time this year but could be emergency options, as could Wright.

So, it appears that those 11 guys will ride out the season in pursuit of the ultimate goal. The five starters, McBride, Robinson, and Achiuwa are likely the safest in Thibodeau’s eyes. This will be the eight-man playoff rotation, with Shamet, Payne, and Hukporti getting occasional minutes based on matchups or injuries. As we know, things can change fast in the NBA, but these eight guys should be the main group.

For now, if Thibodeau wants to run complete line substitutions, he has a full bench unit once Anunoby and Robinson come back. We could see that down the stretch of the regular season if Thibs wants to limit everyone’s minutes, perhaps at the expense of winning every possible game. I doubt the head coach has ever approached any game that way, but he now has the personnel to at least try.

If he sticks to nine guys, Shamet will be the first to get the axe. He has struggled in recent weeks, and Robinson’s return pushes him further down the totem pole.

Knicks Have Several Key Lineup Possibilities

Perhaps the biggest benefit of Robinson’s return is the team’s increased lineup versatility. As we’ve all heard, KAT has struggled with his defensive responsibilities as a center. His rim protection has been lackluster, and he’ll never be good at switching onto ball-handlers in screens. Luckily, Robinson can fill a large part of Towns’ center minutes, as he is an excellent paint defender and can competently guard the perimeter. This will allow KAT to guard bigger wings and battle in the post, which is his natural strength. Robinson and Towns is also instantly the best rebounding frontcourt in the league.

New York can also play a death lineup defensively. Anytime they need a stop, McBride, Bridges, Anunoby, Achiuwa, and Robinson is arguably the toughest lockdown lineup in basketball. For extended stretches, one of Brunson or Towns will likely be inserted, but it’s still an excellent defensive group.

The Knicks have endless lineup combinations to use now depending on the matchup or situation, which will come in handy in the playoffs. They’re deep with talent, have versatile lineups, and can win in any style of game demanded. Leon Rose has built a team worthy of a postseason run. Fans just have to hope for health and execution.

© John E.
