Cleveland sent away Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, three second-round picks, and two swaps to obtain the Hawks’ wing. Hunter, in his sixth season, is averaging a career-high 19 points per game. Late on Thursday, the Cavs made the transaction official, and Head of Basketball Operations Koby Altman commented on the deal.

Cavs Front Office Comments After De’Andre Hunter Trade Deadline Acquisition

“The acquisition of De’Andre Hunter and the potential impact a player of this caliber can bring to Cleveland is immeasurable,” said Altman. “His defensive versatility, in addition to his ability to make shots from the perimeter, strengthens our overall depth to an elite level. We were presented with a great opportunity with this trade, one that was beneficial for the short- and long-term future of this franchise.”

The addition of Hunter adds to Cleveland’s wing depth. Currently, both Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade, the team’s most stout defenders, are out injured, furthering the importance of adding the 6-foot-8 Hunter. Also, Hunter’s 39.3% from the three will fit in perfectly with the best shooting team in the NBA. Recently, the Cavs have been exposed for their lack of switchable wing defenders, Hunter quickly solves that problem with his length.

Moving on from LeVert and Niang

Despite Hunter being a great fit in Cleveland, his addition shipped out two beloved Cavaliers. LeVert and Niang both depart to Atlanta after successful tenures in Cleveland. Both LeVert and Niang are shooting above 40% from behind the arc.

“We want to thank both Caris and Georges for their contributions to our organization,” added Altman. “Their professionalism and dedication both on and off the court have been instrumental in our historic start this season. Caris’ adaptability along with Georges’ leadership and experience, have been invaluable, and their time in Cleveland has left a profound and lasting impression. We wish them nothing but the best for the remainder of their NBA careers.”

The decision to move on from both players can be boiled down to defense and reliability. In last year’s playoff run, both guys saw dips in production. Specifically, Niang, who shot just 22% from the field and 13% from three in 10 playoff appearances. Having Hunter gives the Cavs a more reliable option in the postseason. It is likely Hunter will find his way into the starting lineup before the regular season ends.

The Last Word

The Cavs were looking to move the needle ahead of this year’s trade deadline, and they certainly did that. Having an explosive three-point shooter, solid defender, and long wing fits Cleveland’s role-player mold. The Cavs are no longer reliant on the health of Wade, who is unreliable at best to play every night.

The best part of the move is that they opened up $1.5 million and a roster spot. Rumors have swirled that the team will be active in the buyout market. Cleveland has two open roster spots in total and the ability to sign two players to minimum deals.

Photo credit: © Brett Davis-Imagn Images

In their second buzzer-beater in as many days, the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Atlanta Hawks Wing De’Andre Hunter with just an hour before the trade deadline closed.
