With two of the biggest teams in the nation, the attention it gets on the national stage is always at a high.

ACC Academics and Sports

Sports will get the headlines, but it’s worth noting that some ACC schools boast strong academics as well. Duke University, for instance, hit the country’s top 10 list in national rankings. With such a strong academic presence, a reputable essay writing service is something many students have found useful. It’s not alone, however. Virginia (25), North Carolina (T-29), Wake Forest (T-29), and Boston College (30) have also been recognized as strong academic programs.

With the addition of two of the Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley to the ACC in 2024-25, the conference’s academic profile will become even stronger as these institutions are globally recognized for their academic excellence. Schools like Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech also rank highly within the ACC for academics, particularly in specific fields like communications, engineering, and public health.

Successful ACC Basketball Programs

1. North Carolina Tar Heels

The Tar Heels men’s basketball program is one of the most successful in NCAA history, not just in the ACC. North Carolina has won six NCAA championships and a record 133 NCAA tournament matchups. They have advanced to Sweet Sixteen 31 times, they have a record of 21 Final Fours, and 12 title games.

They won their first title in 1957, five years after Frank McGuire took over as a head coach. He was responsible for the modern era of Tar Heel basketball, but also for popularizing the sport thanks to his rivalry with Everett Case.

Dean Smith is the longest coach in the history of the program, coaching the team from 1961 to 1997, winning two NCAA championships in the span, in 1982 and 1993. That 1982 NCAA championship is one of the most memorable in NCAA history, with a young Michael Jordan hitting a game-winner to beat Georgetown. Smith also promoted desegregation, recruiting the first African American scholarship basketball player, Charlie Scott.

Nowadays, Smith is remembered for his idea, “The Carolina Way”, challenging his players to “play hard, smart, and play together”. The idea promoted excellence in the classroom, not just on the court. In practices, players would thank the passer, as Dean instilled in them the act of selflessness. After Smith, the Tar Heels won three more titles, in 2005, 2009, and 2017. Only Kentucky and UCLA have won more NCAA titles. They have a record of 32 first-place finishes in the regular season in the ACC and 18 ACC tournament wins. Duke has 22.

Some of the greatest players and coaches in league history have been part of the Tar Heels, including Dean Smith, Bob McAdoo, Larry Brown, James Worthy, Michael Jordan, and Vince Carter.

2. Duke Blue Devils

Duke Basketball is synonymous with Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski. The famous head coach was responsible for all five National Championships, and he is second all-time in NCAA titles. He led them to 13 Final Fours, five in a row from 1988 to 1992.

During his tenure at Duke, Mike has recruited and helped some of the best NBA players get high in the draft. Some notable alumni include: Grant Hill, Zion Williamson, Christian Laettner, Carlos Boozer, Jayson Tatum, Kyrie Irving, RJ Barrett, Jabari Parker, Jalen Johnson, Elton Brand, Paolo Banchero, Luol Deng, Dereck Lively, Jared McCain, and JJ Redick.

The Duke-North Carolina rivalry is one of the best in college basketball. The two teams have dominated the ACC Championships, with Duke having more championships, 22 to 18, but fewer first-place regular season finishes 20 to 32. Yet, because of the close proximity of the schools, they also have respect for each other. Here is a fun fact: In 2006, 24 students from the two schools tried to break the world record for the longest continuous game of basketball. They set a record at 57 hours, 17 minutes, and 41 seconds with Duke winning the game.

The Blue Devils are among the most hated teams and players in the US. Often, that hatred is tied to specific players. For example, Christian Laettner was one of the most hated players in college basketball, resulting in a 2015 documentary “I Hate Christian Laettner”.

3. NC State Wolfpack

North Carolina State was one of the pioneers of ACC basketball programs. Everett Case became known as the Father of ACC Basketball. They are the current ACC Champion, beating North Carolina in 2024. The varsity competition in men’s basketball began in 1911, and in 100+ years of play, they rank 25th in total victories among NCAA Division I college basketball programs.

Here’s a fun fact. Case guided the Wolfpack (at the time known as Red Terrors), to their first Southern Conference Championship in 18 years. They celebrated by performing an Indiana high school tradition of cutting down the nets. Nowadays, this tradition has spread to almost every basketball league around the world.

Here is another fun fact. NC could have had Pete Maravich. His father was originally hired because Pete was a highly touted high school player. Sadly, Pete failed to qualify academically at NC State and accepted a scholarship to play at LSU.

As for their success, The Wolfpack have won 2 NCAA titles, and 11 ACC tournament titles, and finished first in the regular season seven times. Notable players from the program include David Thompson, Nate McMillan, Vinny Del Negro, Spud Webb, Dennis Smith Jr., Tom Gugliotta, JJ Hickson, Caleb Martin, and Thurl Bailey.

4. Virginia Cavaliers

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team is third in most regular season first place finishes. They have finished first in the ACC season 11 times, more than teams like NC State, Wake Forest, or Maryland.

Virginia was a top program in the early years of college basketball under Pop Lannigan from 1905 to 1929. However, they struggled through the 1950s and 1960s before Terry Holland came in the 1970s. They won their first ACC Championship in 1974 and earned their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1975.

They have used the name Cavaliers since 1923, predating the Cleveland Cavaliers by half a century. Here is a fun fact. Ty Jerome, a star bench player for the Cavaliers, played for the Virginia Cavaliers in college.

As of 2024, the program has had 13 consecutive winning ACC seasons, which is the longest stream among teams in the ACC. They are 3-2 at Final Four events, winning their last title at the 2019 NCAA tournament championship.

They are one of seven teams in the ACC to win an NCAA championship. During their history, the Virginia Cavaliers have won three ACC tournament championships and one NCAA championship.

Besides Ty Jerome, notable players include Malcolm Brogdon, Ralph Sampson, De’Andre Hunter, Mike Scott, Joe Harris, Ryan Dunn, Sam Hauser, and Trey Murphy III.

5. Maryland Terrapins

Rounding up the top five of the most successful ACC basketball programs, the Maryland Terrapins have won one NCAA championship and three ACC tournament championships. They are ranked below Virginia because Maryland has finished first in the regular season only five times.

The Terrapins played in one of the greatest college basketball games ever, losing to North Carolina State in the 1974 ACC men’s basketball tournament. The game forced the expansion of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, allowing for the inclusion of more than one team per conference.

The team, led by future NBA players like John Lucas, Len Elmore, Maurice Howard, and Tom McMillen, is widely considered the greatest team not to have participated in the NCAA tournament.

Other notable basketball players from the Maryland program include Joe Smith, Steve Francis, Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Buck Williams, Greivis Vasquez, Kevin Huerter, and Len Bias.

Main photo credit:

© Zachary Taft-Imagn Images

The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded in 1953 and remains a stalwart among college basketball conferences.
