While they haven’t gotten a star player yet, they are trying. Recent reports are that the Warriors have called about every possible All-Star NBA player in the league. The good news for the Golden State Warriors is that they get a great trade asset in Dennis Schroder.

Golden State Warriors Could Move a Big Trade Asset

Due to the timing of the first Dennis Schroder to Warriors trade, he is now eligible to be traded again. Schroder is not new to the NBA business, he has been traded five times during his 12-year career in the NBA. The Warriors acquired him from the Nets on the first day he became eligible, December 15th. One of the reasons why the Warriors rushed to make a trade is so that if he doesn’t fit the team, they can flip him again for players that help them.

Schroder is Not a Fan of the NBA Trade System

Recently, Schroder talked about the NBA trade system, calling it a “modern slavery.” He emphasized how players can be traded without their consent, affecting their careers and financial futures. To be fair, he is not wrong. Because the Mavs traded Luka Doncic, he will lose hundreds of millions. Luka was eligible for the super-max extension, but he cannot get that with the Lakers. Schroder told Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports the following,

“It’s modern slavery at the end of the day. Everybody can decide where you’re going, even if you have a contract.”

Schroder is 31 years old, and he has already played for eight teams in the league. He was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks and spent four years there before the team traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Warriors are Correcting their Mistake

When the Warriors traded for Dennis Schroder, some people talked about how he didn’t fit their system. Stephen Curry doesn’t work alongside a ball-dominant playmaker. He is best suited with players who do not dominate the ball and move around. The Warriors have made the mistake previously, of pairing Curry with Chris Paul and D’Angelo Russell, neither lasted more than a year.

Even Draymond Green talked about how Schroder doesn’t fit their system. One day after he was traded to the Warriors, Green said,

“I don’t think he was necessarily brought here to fit. We play a certain style of basketball he does not really play. We need someone who can do the things he does. I’m looking forward to us adjusting to him.”

What Can the Golden State Warriors Get in a Schroder Trade?

The Golden State Warriors have several assets in their arsenal, including their future first-round picks. But getting a trade asset like Schroder is also important. He has a $13 million expiring contract they can use for matching salaries. Because the Warriors are over the luxury tax threshold set at $170 million, they can aggregate contracts. At the same time, they have to be careful not to go over the first apron which is set at $178 million.

The Warriors seem to have changed their trade policy several times this season. Initially, they were looking for a star and inquired about Jimmy Butler. Then, they pivoted toward good role players and were rumored to be in the talks for Nikola Vucevic. Now, Shams reported that they called every team in the league that has an All-Star player. Following the Luka trade, they might think everyone is on the market. Their dream scenario is getting Kevin Durant, but that will require more than Dennis Schroder and picks.

The Golden State Warriors are among the most active teams heading into the Thursday, February 6th deadline.
