That\u2019s what I\u2019m hearing in the aftermath so far, after that absolutely nuts Lakers-Mavericks-Jazz trade that happened in the wee hours on Saturday into Sunday.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA\u2019s need for a center is glaring following the blockbuster move, with many faulting the Lakers for giving up their best defender even though they received an elite guard in return. With a catalyst for the post-LeBron now secured, the team\u2019s focus rightfully shifts to acquiring a center and shoring up the defense Davis commanded the last six seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Robinson&#8217;s Potential Fit, Concerns with the Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/01\/07\/pros-and-cons-of-knicks-trading-mitchell-robinson\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robinson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a solid choice to fill Davis\u2019s shoes at center. The 7\u20190\u201d, 240-pound big man holds career averages of eight points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game on 70% shooting from the field. He was New York\u2019s best rim protector last season, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/01\/14\/knicks-need-mitchell-robinson-to-fix-defense\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York\u2019s defense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has felt his absence this year. He\u2019s making $14.3 million this season as part of a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/27002\/mitchell-robinson\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four-year, $60 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deal signed in 2022. The Lakers still have some assets they could offer the Knicks, most notably <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (making $17M this season) and their 2031 first-round pick. According to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6097103\/2025\/01\/30\/knicks-trade-deadline-nba\/?source=emp_shared_article\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s James Edwards III<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Knicks are in need of wing depth ahead of this year\u2019s deadline. That need may be exacerbated if <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anunoog01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OG Anunoby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (foot) misses time with a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/02\/sports\/og-anunobys-injury-status-vs-rockets-revealed-after-knicks-scare\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sprain sustained against the Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injuries, ironically, are Robinson\u2019s biggest problem. He hasn\u2019t played more than 72 games in a season so far. He also has yet to make his season debut following ankle surgery last May, but Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said he\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/02\/sports\/knicks-mitchell-robinson-pretty-close-to-being-able-to-fully-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cpretty close\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to doing so. The lone drawback of trading for Robinson is eventually getting into situations like this, something the Lakers are unfortunately familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health concerns aside, Robinson can fill a major need for the Lakers defensively, and his ability to score inside suggests he\u2019d thrive in an offense led by <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s all about Pelinka taking bold risks for the sake of improvement.
