Where does that leave the Warriors?

Warriors Trade Pursuit of Jimmy Butler Stalled

Jimmy Butler’s Long-Term Future Holding Back Warriors Trade

If this latest piece of news proves to stand correct, the fact that Butler would not want to play, possibly the rest of his career, with Steph Curry is puzzling. Butler is making it more complicated for Miami to facilitate his demands if it’s the Suns and nothing but the Suns. Back to the Warriors, though, who, according to ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst, have pressed the brakes on their interest in Butler. Why? Butler’s camp has reportedly told the Warriors that he would not sign an extension there if they were to trade for him.

This is true player empowerment when a superstar can demand a trade to a particular franchise and stop certain franchises from trading for him simply by saying, “Don’t do it.” Butler holds this power right now, and the Warriors are likely to listen. Not only are they likely to listen, but they would do well to back off. Butler would demand a significant return in a trade. So, if he has no plans to play with the Warriors past the 2024-25 season, why give up key assets for a temporary move that does not guarantee extended success?

Curry is on public record stating that the Warriors’ mortgaging their future is unwise and advises against it. Still, his comments haven’t stopped the front office from continuing its search for a significant trade, which they have just four more days to do.
