Ever since the Kings announced their franchise star was available in trade talks, the Spurs have been linked in De’Aaron Fox trade rumors. Shams Charania has reported that the Spurs are Fox’s preferred trade destination. On top of that, Fox is reportedly open to signing a long-term contract with San Antonio as well. Recent reports however have surfaced that Fox isn’t the first point guard that has been a Spurs trade target to pair with Victor Wembanyama.

.@ShamsCharania with the latest on De’Aaron Fox:

– The Spurs are indeed Fox’s preferred trade destination.

– Fox would be open to signing a new long-term contract with San Antonio.

– Sacramento is now open to trading Fox due to his continued reluctance to commit long-term. pic.twitter.com/EmvgOjazNZ

— Evan Sidery (@esidery) January 29, 2025

Spurs Have Shown Trade Interest In Multiple Point Guards

Fox Isn’t the Only Point Guard Linked in Possible Spurs Trades

Trade rumors revolving around Fox indicate that he could be playing in a Spurs uniform before we know it. The Spurs are looking to get their next star point guard. They have their star for the long-term in Wembanyama, and pairing him with an elite point guard seems to be at the top of their priority list.

Marc Stein reported that last season the Spurs looked into obtaining Darius Garland from the Cleveland Cavaliers. It probably isn’t worth discussing Garland. The Cavaliers are playing too well, and Garland has solidified himself as a cornerstone of their franchise moving forward.

Ball is also likely unavailable at the moment, but he could become a real Spurs trade target in the future. The Hornets haven’t been open to trade opportunities with their star player yet. That being said, with the lack of success the Hornets have had with Ball, he is much more likely than Garland to be moved.

Giddey and the Bulls are the most likely pair to part ways. The Bulls have made it clear that almost their entire roster is available for trades.

The Best Fit for a San Antonio Spurs Trade

Who is the best fit as a Spurs trade target? Fox certainly seems like an ideal fit. Although he is a bit older than Wembanyama, his scoring and playmaking ability are incredibly enticing for a pairing with Wemby. He has already played with an elite center and proven that he can be the number one or two offensive option on a good team.

Ball may be an exciting pairing, but it just doesn’t fit quite as well. He has yet to show the maturity on or off the court to build a championship contender around. Wembanyama has already shown to be mature beyond his age, and the Spurs are a no-BS organization. Adding a player like Ball into the mix could be a huge risk.

Giddey is certainly a lower-risk, lower-reward fit. The Spurs wouldn’t have to give up nearly as much to get him as Fox or Ball. He still has solid playmaking abilities but is a much worse scoring threat than the other two. His contract also expires after the season, and he will become a restricted free agent.

The Spurs certainly have some decisions to make. Whoever they choose to pursue as the 2025 NBA trade deadline nears, it could be a big move. Finding the point guard to usher in the future of the franchise next to Wembanyama could be a make-or-break decision.
