However, one rumor suggests that the Nets may be interested in Sacramento Kings’ guard De’Aaron Fox. With the opportunity to fully rebuild, the Nets trading for Fox would be a mistake.

Why The Nets Should Avoid Trading For De’Aaron Fox

On January 28th, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Sacramento Kings are expected to open up trade talks regarding Fox. In his fourth year of a five-year $163 million contract, the 27-year-old is averaging 25.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He can become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Amid a positive transition, the Kings are open to talks regarding the All-Star. The Kings have an 11-5 record under their new head coach, Doug Christie, who replaced Mike Brown after the team fired him. Under Brown, the team was 13-18.

Accumulated Draft Capital

Currently the 13th seed in the Eastern Conference, the Nets have a 15-33 record. They ended their seven-game losing streak against the Hornets last night. The team is in rebuild mode with no chance of making the playoffs.

The Nets have accumulated significant draft capital. They acquired first-round picks by trading James Harden, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Mikal Bridges (September 2022 and June 2024). Also, they regained their 2025 NBA Draft pick from the Houston Rockets. This season, they traded Dennis Schröder and Dorian Finney-Smith for multiple second-round picks. As a result, the Nets now have one of the best pools of draft capital in the league, which makes them strong contenders for acquiring De’Aaron Fox.

The Nets Trading For Fox Would Be A Mistake

In June, the Nets will have four first-round picks to build their future roster. In total, they will have 31 future draft picks that they can use to rebuild. The question is, why would they use up so much of their capital for one player?

The Nets have the capital and players to complete the Fox trade. However, will they want to acquire a player with only one year left on his contract, especially since their goal has been to prepare for the future? They have been eyeing top draft prospects such as Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, and Ace Bailey. Why would they trade this year’s or future picks for Fox, knowing he will be playing on a rebuilding Nets team and likely leave in the 2026 free agency class?

There has been no public comment about Fox from Nets general manager Sean Marks. For now, these are rumors and mock trades predicted by league executives.

On Wednesday, Fox addressed the Kings’ right to have trade talks about him, saying, “That’s their decision to make. I can’t tell them not to listen to offers or I can’t tell them to listen to offers.”

It is also rumored that the San Antonio Spurs may be one of Fox’s preferred destinations.

What’s Next?

Hopefully, the Nets will not enter another high salary trap that could cost them not only future draft picks but key players like Nic Claxton and Cam Thomas.

For now, fans will have to wait to see what takes place.

© Brad Penner-Imagn Images

With the February 6th trade deadline a week away, the Brooklyn Nets have not hinted at their planned direction.
