Despite ranking in the top seven in the association in both offensive and defensive rating, the Grizzlies have experienced an exasperating stretch on the defensive end. In January, the Grizzlies currently rank a putrid 26th in defensive rating. Additionally, the Grizzlies have the 28th-ranked three-point defense.

As the regular season continues, the Grizzlies hope to enter the midseason intermission with some significant momentum. The glaring point-of-attack void from Grizzlies’ defender specialists Vince Williams Jr. and Marcus Smart has been missed dearly as of late. Their contributions would be essential for a unit that hopes to return to the defensive prominence that was epitomized earlier this season.

Grizzlies’ Current Lack of Point-of-Attack Defender Depth

The injury report has become a place of the norm for Grizzlies’ swingman guard Marcus Smart since he arrived in Memphis. Smart suffered a partial extensor hood tear in his right index finger back in late December. Since joining the Grizzlies in 2023, Smart has been available for 38 out of a possible 130 games. Per Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, Marcus Smart remains week-to-week as he recovers from the finger injury. Though a small sample size of just 18 games, the Grizzlies pace a 105.5 defensive rating with Smart on the floor.

Marcus Smart isn’t practicing fully with the team yet. He’s doing individual.

Still “week-to-week,” according to Taylor Jenkins.

— Damichael Cole (@DamichaelC) January 29, 2025

Smart’s witty point-of-attack prowess, physicality, and versatility on that end of the floor are components of Jenkins’ defense that he doesn’t have ample of. Per ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst, Smart will be a “focal point” of trade discussions before the trade deadline. Even though his tenure to this point has been somewhat of a disappointment, Smart has a notable trade market to keep an eye on.

Swing Guards Boasting Grizzlies’ Perimeter Defense

The Grizzlies are hoping to get back multi-facet wing Vince Williams Jr. after the All-Star break as he continues his recovery from a grade three right ankle sprain. Williams Jr.’s contributions as one of the versatile Grizzlies’ defenders will be heavily revered upon his arrival. Grizzlies outstanding rookie wing Jaylen Wells has done a phenomenal job filling the point-of-attack role at this point of his career. The second-rounder routinely takes on the task of the opponent’s highly touted perimeter scorer.

Vince Williams Jr. continues make to progress but is now considered week-to-week (grade three ankle sprain), per Grizzlies spokesperson. The hope was for him to play by the end of this month, but his return from the sprain will now take a little longer.

— Damichael Cole (@DamichaelC) January 29, 2025

Jaylen Wells‘ ability to screen navigate, force opponents into low percentage shots, and face guard has been crucial for the Grizzlies all season. Wells’ remarkable impact on that side of the floor paired with Williams Jr.’s versatility will boast the Grizzlies’ defensive backcourt. In last night’s 120-119 home nailbiter win versus the Houston Rockets, Wells’ pivotal face guarding against Rockets star guard Jalen Green on the game’s last possession was significant in forcing the Rockets into a tough contested three-point shot by Fred VanVleet that fell short at the buzzer. The Grizzlies have been one of the league leaders in a majority of offensive categories. A continued emphasis on the defensive side of the court will make this unit a nightmare for opponents to reckon with come springtime. Furthermore, the All-Star break will allow plenty of Grizzlies to rest up and get back up to speed. Grizzlies’ franchise star Ja Morant was out last night with right shoulder soreness.
