Due to his impressive performances, the versatile forward has become a Blazers building block and a vital part of their rebuilding process.

Deni Avdija Has Found His Home as a Blazers Building Block

When Portland made the trade for Avdija, some thought they overpaid. They understandably sent Malcolm Brogdon to the Washington Wizards, but some felt the two first-round picks were too much. However, he has been a standout Blazer, especially in the past few weeks. Avdija averaged 18.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists through his last 20 games. During this stretch, he has been efficient with splits of 51.8% from the field and 34.7% from three. To add to that, he’s looked more comfortable as the season has progressed.

Deni Avdija through his first 15 games as a Blazer:

9.9 ppg
5.7 rpg
2.9 apg
1.9 stocks

36% from the field
3pt% : 26% on 3.3 attempts

Deni Avdija through his last 20 games:

18.7 ppg
7.5 rpg
3.9 apg
1.6 stocks

51.8% from the field
3pt%: 34.7 on 5.1 attempts

Comfortable. pic.twitter.com/nk0wihCC0n

— ❤️ (@heircanada) January 29, 2025

Avdija Has Embraced Being a Blazers Building Block

Before the 2024-25 season, most fans were excited about the Trail Blazers’ rebuild. Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and Toumani Camara stood out for their potential. Avdija came in as a promising player with a valuable contract. However, Blazers fans have fallen in love with his performances on both ends of the court.

Not only has he been stellar on the floor, but he has fully embraced his place as a standout Blazer. In Portland’s most recent game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Avdija had another awesome performance. He posted 30 points, nine rebounds, and two steals to lead the Blazers over the Eastern Conference titans.

After the game, Avdija was ecstatic because he could see the Blazers’ progress into becoming a better team. He had a large role in that development because he is a high-level player with versatility and intangibles.

“I feel so much different in how we play, how we share the ball, just everything,” Avdija said.

Avdija Knows He Can Still Improve

Despite Avdija blossoming into a Blazers star, he knows he still has issues to work on. This is a fantastic attitude because he knows Portland is not a playoff team yet. They are still working out some kinks, especially with their direction for the future.

Avdija figures he will figure into the team’s plans. He has a contract that lasts through the 2027-28 season, and it’s only worth $11 million when he’s 27. That gives Portland flexibility in the market when they plan on making trades. He will likely remain on the team because he their system due to his versatile skill set and personality.

Since he has become a Blazers building block, he must coincide with potential stars like Henderson and Sharpe. The dynamic between Avdija, Camara, and Donovan Clingan has already been impressive, which bodes well for the team’s defense. This matters because if the Blazers have a defensive foundation, they could compete for a playoff spot in a few years.

Avdija is acutely aware of what he needs to iron out as he continues developing. He is only 24 and does not want to be complacent with his NBA development.

“I still have a lot of things to get better at and show. I’m not rushing to be that complete player,” Avdija said after beating the Bucks. “I’m trying to build it block by block, take my time, and work my way to that level.”

Joe hit a home run getting Deni Avdija. Sharpe looks like a 25+ PPG scorer, while Camara is a likely All-Defensive Team mainstay. Henderson is a bit of a mixed bag, but he has played well, which could open the door for trades. Avdija has joined them as a Blazers building block, which is awesome news for general manager Joe Cronin.

It has been a tough road for the Blazers, especially after parting ways with a superstar like Damian Lillard. However, Portland must move on, and thankfully they have a great cast of talented players. Avdija will be a key figure for the team, and hopefully, that will also happen for the other promising Blazers.

© Soobum Im-Imagn Images

Deni Avdija has gradually become the standout Trail Blazer on Portland’s roster.
