He’s often unwilling to trust less qualified bench players with crucial minutes, and this season has been no different. Four of New York’s starters are in the top five of minutes played, causing overuse concerns from the fanbase. It certainly seemed that the team was exhausted during a tough stretch where they lost six of nine. However, injuries to their more experienced backups have put Thibodeau in a difficult position. It’s a more complex issue than it seems, but Thibs has seemed to heed the clamoring fanbase. Since their embarrassing home loss to Minnesota in Julius Randle‘s return the Knicks have gone to a nine-man rotation. It has yielded great results.

Knicks Undefeated With 9-Man Rotation

After losing 116-99 to the Wolves in Randle’s much-awaited return to the Garden, Knicks fans officially sounded the alarm bells. The team was clearly exhausted from four games in six nights with huge minutes for the starters. Moreover, Karl-Anthony Towns missed two of those contests. What was supposed to be a quality perimeter defense was instead getting bombarded with open threes, as NY couldn’t stop the endless dribble penetration. Even the second-ranked offense in basketball can’t overcome that.

Whether Thibs switched to a nine-man rotation because of lack of effort or not, it’s worked wonders. By simply playing ‘Miles ‘Deuce’ McBride, Cameron Payne, Precious Achiuwa, and Landry Shamet 10-plus minutes a night, Thibs has given his top five brand new energy. No starter has eclipsed 37 minutes per game over the last four outings, and New York has gone 4-0. The defensive intensity has had a complete 180, with Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby completely locked in. In a recent win against the Memphis Grizzlies, Bridges was masterful as the primary defender on Ja Morant. In fact, Bridges’ has been incredible in four straight outings as the main defender against four very skilled guards.

Mikal Bridges in his last four games has been matched up with Trae Young, D’Angelo Russell, De’Aaron Fox, and Ja Morant.

Those guys shot 25/72 (34.7%) in those games. They’ve played with “fire and desire”, as legendary broadcaster Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier would say. Obviously, the lighter schedule makes a difference, but spreading out the playing time between nine players gives New York a fresher group of guys.

Thibs Should Stick With This Approach

Robinson’s Return Boosts Depth

Utilizing a deeper rotation while still relying heavily on the starters when needed has paid dividends for New York. It’s also known that Thibs won’t play anyone he doesn’t trust. Luckily, when Mitchell Robinson returns, this Knicks roster has 10 players who are “Thibs guys.” All five of his reserves are competent defenders, with Robinson, Achiuwa, and McBride elite on that end of the floor.

Thibodeau should stick to this same nine/ten-man group for the rest of the season. In the playoffs, he can condense the rotation depending on who’s playing well, but this strategy is definitely working. It’s worth noting that much of Thibs’ unwillingness to rely on his bench has to do with injuries and inexperience. McBride, Achiuwa, Shamet, Payne, and Robinson have all dealt with injuries this season, forcing the coach to choose between leaning on his starters or playing rookies huge minutes. Fans can argue whether he took the right approach, but New York would be much farther down the standings if he didn’t do so. Now that the team is healthy, however, he’s found the right formula. He should stick to it.

Photo credit: © Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

For much of Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau’s career, he’s been known for the heavy workload he imposes on his best players.
