If he remains healthy, the Lakers will get a valuable rotation piece back. He last played on February 1, 2024, against the Boston Celtics. In that game, he had 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists. With the trade deadline looming, is Jarred Vanderbilt more valuable in a Lakers uniform or as a trade asset?

Jarred Vanderbilt Value Higher on Lakers Than in a Trade

Since Vando last played for the Lakers, the team has made significant changes. One of the main changes is hiring JJ Redick as the team’s new coach. In his interviews, Redick has shared that he expects Jarred to play a key role in the team’s defensive coverage. He went as far as saying the team has worked on a zone defensive package that is specifically designed for Vando. The team also has some new faces, like Shake Milton and Dorian Finney-Smith.

With the trade deadline looming, the Lakers are expected to be buyers. Recently, there were reports that the two main stars, LeBron James and Anthony Davis are concerned about the organization’s ability to upgrade the roster. Like many Los Angeles Lakers fans, they believe the team is a piece or two away from being championship contenders. Will that piece come in a trade, or among their own players, like Vanderbilt?

Why Jarred Vanderbilt Has More Value to the Lakers

Here is the harsh truth. Not many teams will take Vando off of the Lakers without some compensation. At this point, Jarred is a piece you throw in for salary, but you have to compensate the team for taking him. He has three years remaining on his four-year, $48 million contract. If the Lakers want to include the forward in any deal, they will also have to include a first-round pick. He is more valuable to the Lakers as a usable player than he is as a trade asset at this point.

Due to the new CBA and apron rules, teams do not want long-term contracts. Vando doesn’t have a high salary but he has three years remaining on his contract. The bigger issue is his injury, he sustained a right foot sprain, which required two offseason surgeries. One of them included the removal of a bone spur in his left foot, and then another one for fluid in his left knee.

Before last season, Jarred was a healthy and reliable player. He has appeared in 74, 78, and 64 games going back to the 2020-21 season. At 24 years old, he is still very young. However, a foot injury is always a concern in NBA circles. Before the injury, he averaged 5.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 steals for the Lakers.

The Lakers are Trying to Make a Trade

Per reports, the Los Angeles Lakers are active on the trade market. They want to make a trade, whether that includes Vanderbilt or other players, we have to wait and see. Here is what Shams Charania said in a recent podcast,

“The Lakers are doing their due diligence to see what’s out there. The problem is, in terms of the trade market, who’s there that can make a difference? They’ll continue to do their due diligence. They have two first-round picks they can play. Those picks, so far out, 2029, 2031, the value on those picks is immense.”

The Lakers also have two second-round picks, their own and the Clippers in 2025. But as of right now, those seem like picks between 40 and 55, they do not have much value.

Jarred Vanderbilt will take the floor on Saturday against the Warriors for the first time in almost a full year.
