A number of names have already popped up on their radar, but recent news surrounding a rival\u2019s man in the middle could add to their list of trade targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Should Lakers Pursue Mavericks Center on Trading Block?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Daniel Gafford Enters Trade Talks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, The Athletic revealed that the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/01\/17\/mavericks-trade-news-daniel-gafford\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mavericks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0put center Daniel Gafford in trade talks, reportedly asking for a \u201cperimeter defender\u201d in return. Dallas has dealt with a gauntlet of injuries as they aim for their own playoff push, notably to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\u2014more recently\u2014<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/livelde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dereck Lively II<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Despite the latter\u2019s absence, Lively has all but cemented himself as the Mavericks\u2019 starting big man going forward, leaving Dallas willing to part ways with Gafford to enhance their depth at other positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 40 games (17 starts) this season, Gafford has averaged 11.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 assists. Head coach <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jj-redick-lakers-would-still-like-to-add-big-bruising-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JJ Redick has longed for a physical, bruising center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and recently said he would <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jj-redick-lakers-will-return-to-two-big-lineups-in-small-doses\/#:~:text=Head%20coach%20JJ%20Redick%2C%20at,to%20a%20two%2Dway%20deal.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiment with two-big lineups in spurts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/thesmokingcuban.com\/dallas-mavericks-daniel-gafford-new-skill-set-ignite-sixth-man-year-buzz\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gafford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has had some excellent performances this season, imposing his will in the paint, crashing the glass for rebounds and defending the rim with ease. This season\u2014a career-best for his scoring so far\u2014he has <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/player\/1629655\/shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">converted 75% of Dallas\u2019 alley-oops to him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (28\/37) and scored on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/playtype-post-up?CF=PLAYER_NAME*E*gafford\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of his post-ups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gafford has also put up solid numbers on the boards, including 2.3 per game on the offensive end\u2014a point of emphasis for the Lakers. Defensively, the 26-year-old has rejected 58 attempts this season and had <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gaffoda01\/gamelog\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight games with three or more blocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pairing his skills with Davis\u2019s dominance could make for a nightmare defensive duo. Offensively, his ability to finish at the rim would give <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another option for piling points in the paint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gafford\u2019s emergence as a reliable big man\u2014whether as a starter or backup\u2014makes him a very intriguing target the Lakers could pursue. The team had <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/lakers\/news\/lakers-news-la-considering-2-wizards-role-players-as-trade-candidates-rks97\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed interest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in him around this time last season. With their need for center depth persisting\u2014and with time running out on other targets\u2014it wouldn\u2019t hurt to explore acquiring a young two-way big in Gafford.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Could the Lakers Pull Off a Trade for Gafford?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers have the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/contracts\/LAL.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contracts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to match Gafford\u2019s $13.4 million salary this season, including a couple of perimeter defenders who they could move on from. One name that could make sense in this scenario is <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/finnedo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has reportedly been \u201cdangled\u201d in trade talks for a center. Next to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Christie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a current starter for the Lakers\u2014and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014an injured defensive-minded wing\u2014Vincent\u2019s salary is large enough for the Lakers to include in a trade.
