Most people saw him as Portland’s star in the long term. Over the past few seasons, big changes have thrown a wrench into him being the face of the Blazers’ future.

Simons is Back to His Best as Portland’s Star and What It Means

Over the Portland Trail Blazers’ past eight games, Anfernee Simons has been on a tear. He has averaged 25.1 points and 5.8 assists with a true shooting percentage of 64. Simons has made 39 three-pointers, which tops the league during that span.

This is a fantastic stretch for Simons because he has struggled in the 2024-25 season. He went from averaging 22.6 points and 5.5 assists in the 2023-24 season to only 17 points and 4.8 assists prior to his eight-game run. It has been a down year for Simons due to the Blazers’ poor play on the court and the constant trade rumors. However, he is playing at a high level again, which could be pivotal for his future with the franchise.

Everyone Knew Simons Was Portland’s Star After the Lillard Era

The Trail Blazers were a perennial playoff team during the 2010s and the early 2020s. That is largely due to Damian Lillard’s excellence as a franchise player. He was the perfect point guard for Rip City because he was a superb playmaker, but an even better scorer. Dame’s leadership was crucial to the Blazers’ success, but the weight of carrying the team gradually broke the camel’s back.

In 2018, Lillard became the mentor to the young Simons, who was only 19 years old. During their five seasons together, Lillard was always in Simon’s’ ear. They finally became backcourt partners midway through the 2021-22 season after Portland dealt CJ McCollum. Simons grew into his own as an off-ball scorer and grew as an on-ball creator for the Blazers roster.

That led to more people seeing him as the natural successor, especially with the likelihood of Lillard asking out. Lillard finally asked out in the 2023 offseason, leading to a trade to the Milwaukee Bucks. This opened the door for Simons to take the reins as Portland’s star, but he has competition with Scoot Henderson.

Anfernee Simons on the impact of Dame. Full episode drops tomorrow. This convo is 🔥 pic.twitter.com/otBkW0uuLC

— JJ Redick (@jj_redick) January 11, 2024

The Blazers Must Choose Between Simons and Henderson

The young Henderson threw a wrench into the long-term plans for Simons because they both are seen as lead guards. Unfortunately for the 2023 NBA Draft’s third-overall pick, his performances have been subpar, to say the least. That muddies the Blazers’ future due to Henderson’s status as Lillard’s “true” successor.

Simons is playing well enough to secure a long-term spot on the Blazers. He is a fantastic offensive player due to his elite shot-creating ability and playmaking prowess. Of course, he has limitations, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Simons is only 25, so he can still fit into the Blazers’ long-term plans if chosen.

The other option is Henderson, a polarizing player for most NBA fans. He earned the excitement and hype ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft. Unfortunately, things haven’t clicked yet for him with Portland. At 20, Henderson has raw potential and elite athleticism. However, he is not putting them together consistently, which has soured people’s opinions on him. The young floor general can improve, especially since he is only 20. However, the time is ticking for him and the Blazers because they must choose between the guards soon.

Fresh off an 18 & 10 game that saw him hit a game-winner, Scoot Henderson followed it up with a 19/6/4 and 5 steal performance. For Scoot his focus HAS to start on the defensive end, where he has the tools to be impactful on and off the ball immediately.pic.twitter.com/D3vOLq0SRV

— Hot Hand Theory (@HotHandTheory) December 29, 2024

The Blazers’ Future Can Progress Without Either Guard

Despite the discourse surrounding Simons and Henderson, they can be off the team for other players. The 2025 NBA Draft looks like one of the best draft classes in recent memory. Cooper Flagg is the likely first-overall pick, but other teams could snag generational prospects beyond that pick.

One of the players entering the 2025 NBA Draft is Rutgers guard Dylan Harper. He fits the bill as the modern-day jumbo point guard like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Luka Doncic. If the Blazers can snag Harper in the draft, that could end the conversations regarding Shaedon Sharpe’s backcourt partner.

Dylan is a 6-foot-6 guard with a tremendous basketball IQ. The youngster is a promising guard with a polished scoring game and a high playmaking ceiling. He fits right in with the Blazers roster because he seems like a natural fit with Sharpe in the backcourt. Harper looks like the happy medium between Simons and Henderson. That is because he is a good shooter like the former and a high-level playmaker like the latter.

The best college basketball player in the NCAA Dylan Harper today vs Columbia..

16 PTS (6-10 FG, 4-7 3PT)
12 AST
11 REBS
3 STLS
1 BLK

#1 PICK!!! pic.twitter.com/mKzvbKNFDw

— Frankie Vision (@Frankie_Vision) December 31, 2024

Of course, the Blazers’ future placement in the draft is still unsure. Simons’ recent performances have shown he is a capable leader as the floor general.
