His NBA Summer League debut was disastrous, particularly his 0-of-15 performance against the Portland Trail Blazers. It marked the worst shooting night in Summer League since 2017. Critics pounced, ignoring the Washington Wizards’ focus on his growth, not immediate results. Washington’s coaching staff encouraged Sarr to shoot often to build comfort with NBA 3-pointers and develop his offensive skill set. That commitment to development has helped him rise to the top of the Kia rookie ladder in January. Alex Sarr’s rise brings his All-Star potential into full view and gives the historically “weak” 2024 draft class a rare opportunity to showcase All-Star-caliber talent.

Alex Sarr’s Recent Rookie Ladder Ranking Shows He Could Be Best Of 2024 Draft Class

The results were rough at first. Sarr’s transition to the NBA included struggles with consistency and confidence. However, December showcased noticeable improvement, sparking optimism for the 19-year-old’s potential as a two-way player.

Rising Rookie Rankings

Despite Washington’s 6-29 record, Sarr’s individual performance stands out. He ranks second among rookies in scoring with 11.8 points per game, trailing only Jared McCain of the Philadelphia 76ers (15.3). Sarr also ranks third in rebounding (6.5 per game) and player efficiency rating (14.00). His defense, however, is the most impressive part of his game. He leads all rookies in blocked shots per game (1.6) and ranks ninth in the entire league.

Few pay attention to a struggling Wizards team, but Sarr’s growth is impossible to ignore. Head coach Brian Keefe noted,

“You’re seeing the growth on a day-to-day basis. He’s becoming more comfortable on offense.”

A Shooter’s Transformation

Sarr’s shooting turnaround has been remarkable. His 3-point percentage jumped from 23.8% in October to 45.5% in December.

“The shots are just falling,” Sarr said. “Whether I was missing them or not the first month, I didn’t stop taking them.”

Sarr’s improvement is evident in his catch-and-shoot stats. He shot 23.8% on catch-and-shoot threes in October, rising to 46.3% in December. The increased volume and consistency from the corners and the top of the key highlight his improved mechanics and confidence.

Defensive Growth and Challenges

Defensively, Sarr is already versatile. The Wizards are testing his perimeter defense by assigning him to guard smaller players, like New York Knicks’ guard Josh Hart.

“I didn’t feel too out of my comfort zone,” Sarr said. “It’s just being able to roam around, covering ground, and helping anywhere on the court.”

However, Sarr remains a work in progress. His limited size and skill set occasionally cause struggles against stronger big men. He also needs to improve catching the ball cleanly and finishing at the rim.

To aid his development, the Wizards signed Jonas Valančiūnas to provide mentorship and shield Sarr from early physical tolls. Valančiūnas has excelled in his role, balancing locker room leadership with on-court consistency. His trade value has risen as the deadline nears, but his mentorship remains invaluable to Sarr’s growth.

Long-Term Vision for Sarr

Washington’s front office is following the Oklahoma City Thunder model, prioritizing high-ceiling talent and accelerated development. The Wizards rely heavily on Sarr, Carlton Carrington, and Kyshawn George, with the trio logging significant minutes among rookies. This deliberate approach aligns with Washington’s commitment to rebuilding through the draft.

By 2028, Sarr, Carrington, George, and Bilal Coulibaly could form a cohesive young core. The Wizards aim to pair them with elite talent from future drafts, including potential stars like Cooper Flagg or A.J. Dybantsa. Sarr’s current trajectory positions him as the best chance from the 2024 draft class to reach All-Star status.

Alex Sarr Presents the Wizards and the 2024 Draft Class With a Unique Opportunity

Washington’s long-term strategy could pay off if Sarr continues developing. His December breakout and growing versatility suggest he can lead the Wizards into a promising future. By 2028, with Capital One Arena renovations complete, Sarr could spearhead a rejuvenated team ready to make some noise. The Wizards’ faith in Sarr is already bearing fruit. With more time and experience, he may emerge as the crown jewel of the 2024 draft class. A rare opportunity for the 2024 draft class to showcase All-Star talent.

Alex Sarr’s early NBA journey faced intense scrutiny.
