In a brief statement on Friday night, he made it clear that he won’t be bothered by the media attention he’s attracted. But Redick’s response suggests that he could hear more criticism from Barkley soon.

“Literally Don’t Care”: JJ Redick Responds to Hall-of-Famer Charles Barkley’s Criticism

Redick was asked about Barkley’s recent rant against him when the TNT commentator called the Lakers coach a “dead man walking.” Despite the harsh words, Redick said it didn’t get under his skin.

While talking to the press on Friday evening, Redick revealed he didn’t even watch the entire clip featuring Barkley’s words. Redick said the Hall of Famer’s comments didn’t create even the smallest bit of aggravation:

“I got a random text from somebody after the game. I went to look at my phone and it says something about Charles Barkley. I’m like, ‘Huh?’ But [Lakers assistant coaches Greg St. Jean and Beau Levesque] showed me. I didn’t make it all the way through the clip, I gotta be honest with you. My resting heart rate is 64. I watched the clip, it was 64. Literally don’t care. I have other thoughts, but don’t care.”

This back-and-forth between the two started because of a statement Redick made criticizing the sports media industry and how it covers the NBA. Redick said the constant negativity from analysts such as Barkley has led to a damaged “product” that fans are losing interest in. In response, Barkley railed against Redick on TNT. He suggested Redick wouldn’t lead the Lakers to success and could possibly be fired in the near future.

The Feud Continues

Neither Redick nor Barkley are afraid of making controversial comments. That means it’s possible that this bitter war of words is just beginning. There is a good chance that Barkley will respond to Redick’s statement, and the rift between the two could grow.

Redick has made it clear that he isn’t paying attention to what Barkley or anyone else is saying. Instead, he is singularly focused on enabling the Lakers to stay on track. He has helped them climb up to the fourth seed in the Western Conference. His statement to the press came after the team defeated the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night. That gave them their second straight win.

Redick has received critical attention ever since being hired as head coach in the summer. Some people thought he was a bad choice because of his lack of coaching experience. Meanwhile, others felt his years as a player and his close relationship with LeBron James would work wonders for the Lakers. So far, the team’s 20-14 record proves Los Angeles is competitive but could still get better.

The Last Word

The debate about NBA ratings isn’t going away any time soon. Plus, Redick and Barkley probably won’t step back from their words. Therefore, basketball fans should expect to see more fireworks between these two while the Lakers attempt to reach the playoffs and find success during Redick’s first season as their leader.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has responded to Charles Barkley’s comments about him and his future with the team.
