Louisville is on pace to record their first winning season since 2020, and it appears the Cardinals have secured their future point guard.

The Louisville Cardinals basketball had fallen on hard times of late, posting three straight losing seasons. The Cardinals are 47-83 since the 2020-21 campaign started and last won 20 games six years ago.

In March, the Cardinals pried coach Pat Kelsey, a two-time mid-major conference COY, away from the College of Charleston in an attempt to turn things around. Kelsey is the Cardinals’ fourth coach over the last four years.

And so, far things couldn’t be going better for UofL.

Louisville ran their winning streak to three straight and improved to 9-5 overall (2-1 ACC), surpassing last year’s eight-win total, with their 13-point victory over UNC at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals’ defense held the Tar Heels without a field goal over the final five minutes of the game and received a game-high 26 points from Chucky Hepburn. Their victory last night

Louisville Basketball: Cardinals Secures Point Guard Of Future, What’s Next, and Is An NCAA Berth In Reach?

Hepburn, who leads the Cardinals at nearly 16 points a game, was highly efficient, averaging 3.2 points per shot. Hepburn attempted just eight field goals, connecting on five of them, but he tied a school record with 16 made free throws, including seven down the stretch.

“I am proud of our guys,” Kelsey said following the game. “It was a heck of a win. Obviously, Carolina is extremely talented. They are as good of a downhill, transition attacking team in American as you’ll see – maybe the best. We really had to be on transition defense and block out, which are two things we really, really harped on. I thought our guys were really good in that regard. It was probably our best defensive effort of the year. Terrence Edwards, who has been phenomenal for us scoring the ball, I didn’t even know that he was two-for-12 from the field and only had seven points because his defensive performance was outstanding. He wasn’t the only guy who guarded RJ Davis, but he guarded him the majority of the time. He (Davis) is a terrific player, as we all know, very, very decorated, an All-American. I thought Fatt (Edwards) did a phenomenal job. Chucky was amazing – 26 (points), seven (assists) and two (rebounds) was an elite performance. I thought <dfn>James Scott</dfn> was great at the end of the game, to close out with a block, a big rebound, and a dunk.”

Does Louisville Have A Chance To Make The NCAA Tournament?

Louisville accomplished a few other things besides extending their current win streak against Carolina. The Cardinals sit in fifth place in the ACC, and their two conference victories are one fewer than a season ago. The Cardinals haven’t had a winning conference record since winning eight games in the COVID-shortened campaign.

Louisville has played nine of its 14 games at home, winning six of its nine contests at the YUM! Center. Therefore, the Cardinals are 3-2 away from home, including 1-1 in true road contests.

Louisville’s NET ranking of 50 is the fifth-best in the ACC. According to the NET Rankings, the ACC is considered the fifth-best conference, and the Cardinals have the 10th-toughest schedule. The ACC received five NCAA Tournament bids last season, four of which were at-large.

Louisville has a +6.8 scoring margin and 4-0 in Quad III and IV games. The Cardinals are also 4-5 in Quad I and II contests, including just 1-4 in Quad I contests.

Louisville finished second in the Battle of the Atlantis, falling to Oklahoma in the championship game. UofL picked up quality wins over Indiana and West Virginia in the tournament. Their victory over UNC was their third quality win.

Louisville’s four setbacks have all come against quality teams. The Cardinals suffered 20-point victories to Tennessee and Ole Miss. They fell to Duke by 11 and to Kentucky by 8.

The Cardinals have lost some depth. Koren Johnson, who averaged nearly 20 minutes off the bench, is redshirting this season after suffering a shoulder injury in the Cards’ second game of the season. Then, Kasean Pryor suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Oklahoma in the Battle of Atlantis championship game. The 6-9 wing, who came into his own last season at South Florida, was having a solid campaign before the injury/

Right now, Louisville is on the cusp of an at-large bid. But there is still lots of time left in the season. The Cardinals have at least a half-dozen quality games left on their schedule to make their case.

Mikel Brown Jr. Commits To Cardinals

But the real story was what Louisville revealed at the eight-minute media timeout in the opening half of the UNC game. With Louisville leading 21-18 at the stoppage, following a three-point Tar Heels three-point play, the Cardinals revealed that five-star 2025 point guard Mikel Brown Jr. was officially part of the program. Brown immediately becomes the highest recruit and first five-star during Kelsey’s short tenure.

After the announcement, Brown walked onto the floor and received a standing ovation. According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Paul Biancardi, Brown signed with Louisville during the early signing period, but the Cardinals kept the news under wraps.

“The deciding factors were the energy of the program, the family environment, and the fact that Coach Kelsey is so loyal he brought his whole staff and walk-ons with him to Louisville, which demonstrates his honor and loyalty,” Mikel Brown Sr. told ESPN. “We are a very tight-knit family and value his commitment to bringing those along who he could have very easily left behind.”

“Coach Kelsey’s system is the perfect fit, especially considering the significant minutes available at the point guard position,” Brown Sr. added. “Mikel loves challenges and sees the opportunity to be Coach Kelsey’s cornerstone piece in leading Louisville. He’s not afraid to stand alone and uplift a program.”

Brown held at least 26 offers, with Alabama and UFC reportedly among the schools in the mix for his services. In addition to Louisville, Brown also visited Alabama and UFC twice. Florida, Indiana, Texas, Indiana, Ole Miss, Providence, and Kentucky also received visits.

While Kelsey brought in 14 newcomers this offseason, four-star forward Khani Rooths was the only high schooler. Rooths, the consensus No. 33 2024 recruit, has been part of Kelsey’s second unit. He averages 3.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in 12 minutes of action.

Who Is Mikel Brown Jr.?

Brown is a consensus top 10 recruit in the class of 2025 and the top overall point guard. The 6-3 lead guard is ranked as high as No. 7 by 247Sports. Of all the primary scouting services, On3 has the Orlando (FL) native the lowest at No. 18.

Brown is a heady lead guard with mad handles. He can shoot, but what he does best is improve his teammates.

Brown is currently playing at DME Academy in Daytona Beach. Through the first seven games of the season, Brown averages 29.7 points and 2.7 assists. He played for Overtime Elite as a junior.

Here is 247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein’s scouting report on Brown:

“Brown first made a name for himself as a diminutive, but extremely skilled, young guard. In recent years though, he’s sprouted up to 6-foot-3 and simultaneously embraced being a true point guard, taking his game to new levels.”

“He remains exceptionally skilled. In fact, there isn’t much he can’t do with the ball in his hands. He has total control of his handle, as both a creator and distributor, and a terrific left hand. He’s a talented passer with excellent floor vision and capable of hitting all corners of the court. He can throw pinpoint crosscourt skip passes with both hands, zip in pocket passes off the dribble, and make all the other associated pick-and-roll reads with good timing. He can rise-up for pull-ups off the dribble and posted 45/40/91 shooting splits in 3SSB action. There are still moments when he can be streaky as a shooter, as he continues to adjust to his evolving body mechanics, but he has a very clean release and projects as a real shot-maker long-term.

Brown also has very good natural pace and appears to possess a real intellect for the game as well, picking up and implementing concepts quickly. We’ve also seen more consistent two-way engagement as of late, with a matured motor and overall approach.

The biggest limitation in his game right now is just a lack of strength. While he’s grown several inches in recent years, and has a 6-foot-6 wingspan, he has a more naturally narrow frame. He can get pushed off his spots at times.”

What’s Next For the Cardinals?

Louisville is a veteran team with nine seniors. So, Kelsey will have to continue hitting the recruiting trail hard over the coming months or, more than likely, hit the transfer portal. Brown is currently the only 2025 recruit who has pledged to the Cardinals.

Louisville should have Koren Johnson back, as long as he doesn’t transfer. He and Brown could comprise Kelsey’s starting backcourt next season. Sophomore Cole Sherman and senior Kobe Rogers could also be in the mix for minutes in the backcourt.

Sherman is deep on the Cardinals bench this year, seeing five minutes of action in three games. Sherman appeared in 12 games over his first two seasons at Northern Kentucky before transferring to Louisville. Meanwhile, Rogers, who played for Kelsey at Charleston, is redshirting this season.

Rooths likely will start at small forward next season, with Noah Waterman graduating. James Scott projects as the Cardinals’ starting power forward, while Aly Khalifa, who took a redshirt season to rehab his injured knee, could start at center.

As evident, Louisville really needs to add quality depth. Brooks Holton of the Louisville Courier said that Kasean Pryor could apply for an injury waiver, though that has yet to be decided.

Of the 28 high school seniors the Cardinals have offered, only three players have not committed. Consensus top-5 2025 prospect Nate Ament and Brayden Burries.

Ament has officially visited Louisville, but the Cardinals are one of several programs still in the mix for the 6-9 wing. However, it doesn’t appear that Burries, a consensus five-star combo guard, is no longer considering Louisville.

Have the Louisville Cardinals finally turned the corner?
