The NBA fined the two-time All-Star $100,000 for using profane language during a live television interview. This was after the Timberwolves 113-112 victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday which Edwards made the go-ahead basket to win the game. Obviously, emotions run high and players get excited for winning a close game. It was at that moment where Edwards let some profanities slip. This issue isn’t anything new for him. The league said the reasoning for the fine was based on Edwards’ history of using profane language during media interviews.

While some fans have no problem with Ant’s openly honest comments to the media, these repeat fines show that the league wants Ant to tone down the profanity. This is the third time this month that Anthony Edwards has been fined by the league, and they’ve been getting more expensive.

Anthony Edwards Fined For Third Time This Month

First Two Offenses

After the Timberwolves defeated the Golden State Warriors on December 6, Edwards addressed the media where he was hit with his first fine of the month. He was fined $25,000 for using profane language. It wasn’t clear exactly what Edwards said that resulted in him getting fined but this wouldn’t be the first offense.

Fast forward to December 21 when the Timberwolves played the Warriors again. That game, however, ended in a loss. Again, Edwards had some strong things to say about the referees. As we know, the NBA doesn’t take too kindly when players criticize the refs. Edwards got fined $75,000 as a result, but he wouldn’t waste anytime picking up his third fine. In fact, it came a week later against the Houston Rockets during the postgame interview.

Time to Tone Down the Profanity

Edwards has racked up a total of $200,000 worth of fines throughout the month of December. As the face of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Edwards might want to refrain from using such language, or he will continue having money taken from his pockets. At this rate, the fines seem they will continue to get more expensive. Going forward, it’s something that the team may have to monitor to make sure this isn’t a regular occurrence.

While some fans may enjoy Edwards’ brutally honest personality, he might want to tone down the profanity. While this may not affect the Timberwolves performance as a team, you would want more from your team leader. The NBA takes issues like this seriously. Edwards isn’t the only player fined for using profanity or being critical of the refs, but three fines in one month is probably a sign to be more thoughtful of what you say to the media. If incidents like these continue to happen throughout the season, will the league continue to up the fines or will they take a different approach? It could be a New Year’s resolution for Edwards to refrain from such language when talking to the media. Even so, this problem shouldn’t get in the way of Timberwolves winning games.

It’s been a very costly month for Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards.
