Steve Kerr<\/a> has not been hesitant as of late to let his opinions be known about the play of his young players. With the Warriors continuing to struggle\u2014especially as of late\u2014 Jonathan Kuminga<\/a> has been the most recent target. Whether Kerr\u2019s comments<\/a> reflect someone determined to see Kuminga live up to his full potential or someone ready to hand that responsibility off to someone else, Kerr\u2019s continued dissatisfaction with Kuminga is wholly apparent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to stop coaching (him). The last two games, his field goal attempts, his decision making has been poor. That needs to improve.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jonathan Kuminga, who recently commented<\/a> on his continued lack of a consistent role, does not seem to quite be seeing eye to eye with his head coach. Or, at the very least, he doesn’t seem to be connecting the dots between his level of play\u2014questionable field goal attempts and poor decision-making, as alluded to by Steve Kerr\u2014and his undefined role. Furthermore, the 22-year forward seems confident that scant few of his peers would be able to endure what he has early on during his career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I start, sometimes I don\u2019t\u2026<\/span>I’m used to it. From where I come from, you always got to be mentally tough. A lot of people that are playing … if they were in my shoes, they’ll quit basketball. They’ll need a therapist. They’ll go through a lot of mental situations. But that thing don’t affect me.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Kuminga\u2019s comments are certainly noteworthy. But they’re also not all that groundbreaking. Kuminga has long expressed frustration with the inconsistency of his role. The question is, is Kuminga justified in his comments, or is he creating unnecessary drama for the Warriors?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Closer Look at Jonathan Kuminga\u2019s Situation<\/b><\/h3>\n

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Four years into the Jonathan Kuminga<\/a> experience, the ultra-athletic forward remains more tantalizing in theory than in reality. The more flashes of upside<\/a> Kuminga provides, the more his underlying efficiency numbers remain underwhelming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite what the Warriors have said publicly about\u00a0Kuminga<\/a>, actions speak louder than words. There’s a reason they were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension<\/a> last offseason. And there’s a reason reports continue to flood in about the Warriors aggressively pursuing a second star<\/a>. Kuminga may claim to be \u2018embracing\u2019 his struggles regarding his role. But what he really needs to do is come to grips with the part that his level of on-court success has played in his inability to secure a larger role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kuminga is desperate for a bigger role, and the Warriors are desperate for a reliable number two to place next to Steph Curry<\/a>. It’s long overdue for the Warriors to stop trying to put a square peg into a round hole and find a new home for their former seventh-overall pick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n

While the Warriors can\u2019t just giveaway Kuminga\u2014like they did<\/a> James Wiseman<\/a>\u2014a separation between the two feels inevitable. If it’s not reached the point of distraction yet, Kuminga continuing to be vocal about his lack of a steady role is certainly heading that way. With the likes of Jimmy Butler<\/a> reportedly<\/a> off the trade block, the Warriors\u2019 options could be dwindling, but a substantial move of some kind should still be the Warriors\u2019 top priority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s also not a great look for Kuminga to continue to show such discontentment with his situation. It\u2019s one thing to feel deserving of a bigger role or more on-court opportunity. It\u2019s entirely another thing to disregard the fact that you\u2019ve found yourself within one of the most respected organizations in the league. It feels like a step too far and shows a lack of self-awareness to claim that other players in his situation would \u201cquit basketball.\u201d Most lottery players\u2014especially high lottery picks\u2014are not awarded the opportunity to immediately and continuously compete for Championships while simultaneously playing with one of the greatest players to ever step onto the hardwood, Steph Curry. There are more than a few players around the league with sizable roles who would be more than willing to switch places with Kuminga. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
