They are currently 16-12 and sixth in the Western Conference, riding a three-game win streak after several ugly losses. As with this season, they\u2019re expected to be in the contention conversation, but a string of events has put a key member of their front office into question.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Exec Trending Toward &#8220;Scapegoat&#8221; Status, Per Insider<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Buha: Pelinka May Be Fall Guy at Season\u2019s End<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent episode of his podcast \u201cBuha\u2019s Block,\u201d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/hjydGRL0HgI?si=ULEyZh0zvb3XoJ1X\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Jovan Buha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussed the narrative of a scapegoat for the Lakers\u2019 miscues over the last few seasons, mentioning how <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell Westbrook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/andscape.com\/features\/milwaukee-bucks-assistant-coach-darvin-ham-in-a-great-space-in-return-to-coaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darvin Ham<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had taken the fall for the team\u2019s previous shortcomings. Now, if the Lakers fall out of contention once again, Buha believes the next scapegoat may come from the top of the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLast season, all the fingers got pointed at Darvin Ham, basically, for everything that went wrong. And this year, \u2026 it\u2019s not really as clear of a scapegoat, and I think, depending on what they do over the next \u2026 I think it is going to be [Rob] Pelinka, that\u2019s the way this is trending.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was understandable, maybe a year or two post-Russ, kind of not having the best roster, not getting out of that mess. But, it\u2019s taken several years now.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers have been on a rollercoaster ever since reaching the pinnacle of NBA glory in 2020, from being bounced in the first-round the following season due to injuries to making the Western Conference Finals after a 2-10 start in 2023. Pelinka, the Lakers\u2019 General Manager since <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/los-angeles-lakers-agent-rob-pelinka-new-general-manager\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March of 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has seen it all while leading the purple and gold. Fans did not expect the Lakers\u2019 title luck to run out after 2020, which is part of why the years since have been disappointing for many.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cScapegoat\u201d Argument Holds Up<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelinka has embarked on several bold ventures to improve the Lakers, from the failed Westbrook experiment to hiring first-time head coaches in consecutive appointments. He seemingly believed all of these avenues would lead to sustained Laker excellence, but so far, that has not been the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/dwight-howard-blames-rob-pelinka-for-2020-lakers-not-staying-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have expressed time and again that, if the 2019-20 team stuck together, fans would see more than 17 banners hanging from Crypto.com Arena. And to an extent, they\u2019re correct. Pelinka\u2019s roster construction has come under fire for that reason, among others. Since 2020, he has been unable to assemble a solid supporting cast around <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014let alone one that can legitimately contend in a crowded Western Conference. His choices have also led to the Lakers losing young players and watching them flourish on other teams (e.g. letting <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carusal01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Caruso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> walk in free agency or waiving former two-way players <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pippesc02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scotty Pippen Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/huffja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay Huff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014who are now thriving with the Grizzlies). And where rival teams appear to be moving the needle with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/12\/15\/golden-state-brooklyn-trade-grades-dennis-schroder\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trades<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/12\/21\/lakers-trade-rumors-nikola-vucevic\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have stayed pat, with Pelinka <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10108646-rob-pelinka-on-lakers-quiet-trade-deadline-cant-buy-a-house-thats-not-for-sale\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cYou can\u2019t buy a house that\u2019s not for sale,\u201d among other sayings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agent-turned-exec has had many chances to prove himself in the driver&#8217;s seat of the Lakers\u2019 decisions. Aside from the 2020 championship, he has fallen short in several respects, making this season arguably the most important one of his GM career. With James set to turn 40 in a week and a 31-year-old Davis playing at an award-winning level, Pelinka has all the motivation he needs to truly maximize their championship window. Even with some players proving to be pivotal pieces under Redick, there\u2019s always room for improvement, which Pelinka and the Lakers brass must capitalize on in the coming months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word on Rob Pelinka<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers staying dormant at this year\u2019s deadline may be costly for them, but particularly Pelinka, whose actions (and, at times, lack thereof) have put him into these conversations in the first place. As he goes through his eighth year as LA\u2019s GM, Pelinka must prove he can steer the Lakers towards the league\u2019s biggest stage once again\u2014especially if he doesn\u2019t want this season to, potentially, be his last.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lakers\u2019 first quarter of the season has come with mixed results.
