Prior to the team\u2019s game against the red hot Memphis Grizzlies, he outlined <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/khobi_price\/status\/1868478297719369779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what the ideal fifth starter looks like<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;ideally, we\u2019d want that fifth guy to be a complementary piece to the other four guys. And that complementary piece most likely looks like a point-of-attack defender. A guy that doesn\u2019t need the ball in his hands. He\u2019s gonna play hard, he\u2019s gonna pick up fullcourt. Could shoot 3\u2019s. So yeah, we\u2019re trying to find some level of consistency for the group. And that fifth guy, if there\u2019s somebody that can sort of find consistency individually, we\u2019d like that spot to remain with the same guy.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One particular Laker played that role to a tee last night, leading many to wonder if he\u2019s the missing piece to their complicated puzzle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Lakers May Have Found Their Fifth Starter<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Boosting the First Five to the \u201cMax\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After two years mostly stuck on the bench, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Christie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been given more freedom under Redick. The 21-year-old former Michigan State Spartan is averaging 6.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 20.3 minutes per game, and he recorded his third straight start and fourth of the season last night against Memphis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/05\/redick-previews-max-christies-new-lakers-3-and-d-role\/\" target=\"_self\">Christie<\/a> finished with seven points, two rebounds, one assist and one block against the Grizzlies, but even more impressive was his torture-chamber-like defense on star <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ja Morant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I just think the size and just the athleticism and the fact that, you know, Max has a really good feel for the game and he can move, [that] was important.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Christie&#8217;s Growth Makes Him Worthy Candidate<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he didn\u2019t confirm whether Christie would be a mainstay in the starting lineup, Redick addressed how the increased opportunities have benefited the fourth-year guard this season:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn terms of, you know, his long term outlook and his growth, I think these opportunities are great for him. You know, I&#8217;ll reference the Oklahoma City game where, you know, he made a mistake at the end. And we play a week later in Atlanta. and you know, he&#8217;s in the sort of the same situation at the end of regulation, and he gets a block on Trae Young. So, you know, with young guys, these opportunities are great for them to grow not only in confidence but also just the learned experience and the learned knowledge of being in different situations.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christie has already found himself in various situations over the course of his career, all contributing to his growth one way or another. His recent performances as a starter\u2014including a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/basketball\/news\/lakers-max-christie-scores-season-high-15-points\/#:~:text=Christie%20recorded%2015%20points%20(5,season%20from%20a%20scoring%20perspective.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season-high 15 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in LA\u2019s loss to Minnesota\u2014highlight his willingness to compete, and he gives the team more flexibility and energy than it had in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christie\u2019s scoring, defense, athleticism and overall fit make him an ideal candidate for that fifth starting spot in the lineup, bringing qualities that Vincent or rookie <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalton Knecht<\/a> have lacked at this point. His recent track record shows he has what it takes to thrive alongside <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His ability to take on the opponents\u2019 best player\u2014and do so with remarkable results\u2014takes a significant load off of his teammates and allows them to focus on their assignments.
