San Antonio Spurs rookie standout\u00a0<\/span>Stephon Castle<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is having an exemplary first NBA season. The rookie race has provided some good entertainment, with other rookies such as\u00a0<\/span>Jared McCain<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Dalton Knecht<\/span><\/a>\u00a0making their <\/span>own<\/span> noise in their respective cities. However, a recent significant injury has opened the door a little wider for some of this season’s young guns. In Castle’s case, his path to capturing ROTY honors <\/span>just<\/span> became easier.<\/span><\/p>\n

ROTY Door Swings Open Wide for Spurs Rookie<\/h2>\n

With the recent news out of Philadelphia that 7<\/span>6ers rookie McCain tore his meniscus<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Friday night against the Indiana Pacers, the Rookie of the Year race has one less combatant. While the development is no light matter and incredibly disappointing for McCain, it does help a few other rookies out.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was surprising to have this many first-year players come out of the gate NBA-ready and contribute to their teams nightly. The reason is that\u00a0this summer’s draft class was seen as less potent than past ones. McCain was showing his offensive touch, while Knecht was showing he can drain threes in bunches. Even\u00a0<\/span>Zach Edey<\/span><\/a> in Memphis has stepped in and proved he can play at the NBA level. His transition to the NBA\u00a0was a concern for\u00a0many executives going into the draft. And then there’s Castle, who hit the jackpot in San Antonio. A) He’s got Gregg Popovich as his coach. B) He’s got\u00a0<\/span>Chris Paul<\/span><\/a> as his mentor. C) He’s playing for one of the most respected franchises in league history with a reputation for player development at the highest level.<\/span><\/p>\n

Castle is cashing in on his opportunities and proving\u00a0he will\u00a0be one of the league’s top point guards in the future.\u00a0His Rookie of the Year chances were already up there with McCain and\u00a0<\/span>Knecht<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>That said,<\/span> with McCain’s recent injury that will sideline him <\/span>indefinitely,<\/span> and Knecht’s recent <\/span>bout<\/span> of inconsistency, the door is now wide open for Castle to run with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Case for Coming Out on Top<\/h3>\n

The former UConn Husky averages 12.1 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game through 24 games. He’s not only a starter, but he’s also closing out games. Castle and\u00a0<\/span>Devin Vassell<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have become quite the tag team for the Spurs in the backcourt. Of course, Paul’s presence has been essential to the team’s success thus far as well. It’s not just Castle’s stats that are impressive for a first-year player. His effort and energy on defense are noticeable and effective in the same. Popovich put Castle in position to excel from day one. Interim head coach Mitch Johnson hasn’t missed a step and allowed Castle to be present in important phases of the game. This has kept him in a position to succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

What also helps Castle’s ROTY case is the trajectory the Spurs are heading. Granted, they’re only 13-11 and 11th in the West. Yet, they look like a team destined for the playoffs, or at least the play-in. The same can’t be said for McCain’s Sixers, even if he was healthy throughout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

San Antonio is Playoff Bound<\/h3>\n

Victor Wembanyama<\/span><\/a>‘s second season\u00a0<\/span>is looking<\/span>\u00a0like his first in leading the franchise to their first playoff appearance since 2019. They last made the <\/span>play-in<\/span> 2022. Given the current state of the West and the large handful of underperforming teams, don’t be surprised if the Spurs are playing in a playoff round by the end of it all. That will help Castle’s case even more. That said, Castle’s window to chase down ROTY while the regular season is wide open.
