The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/12\/13\/los-angeles-lakers-interested-markelle-fultz\/\" target=\"_self\">Lakers<\/a> remain at the forefront of those conversations, with rumors growing every week. While fans are pointing to several players LA can part ways with, it appears the team wants one starter to stick around.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lakers Trade Rumors: Talks Around Key Player are a &#8220;Non-Starter&#8221;<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Lakers Not Budging on Austin Reaves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latest episode of the podcast <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=paj_Xayhaqc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBuha\u2019s Block,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Athletic\u2019s Jovan Buha and Sam Amick touched on what to make of the Lakers at this point in the season. Amick noted how, despite LA\u2019s recent struggles and the clear need for trades, the front office will continue to ignore calls for guard <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Reaves<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They&#8217;ve been mostly stagnant for almost two years now in terms of making moves. And they&#8217;ve been very reluctant, specifically, to discuss Austin Reaves who I only highlight because he&#8217;s a good, young player on a very team-friendly contract that would inspire other teams to play ball, negotiation-wise. But that, to my knowledge, is still a non-starter.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 19 games this season, Reaves has averaged 16.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists on .440\/.355\/.774 splits. He has missed the last five games due to a left pelvic contusion, though is <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-injury-report-lebron-james-out-austin-reaves-questionable-vs-timberwolves\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listed as \u201cquestionable\u201d for tonight\u2019s game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the Timberwolves at 8:00 p.m. ET.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Reaves has been one of the team\u2019s go-to players this season under head coach <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JJ Redick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He holds the third-highest usage rate among all Lakers (21.3%), has the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/advanced?TeamID=1610612747&amp;dir=D&amp;sort=POSS\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third-most possessions on the team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1,332 this season) and plays the third-most minutes per game despite his absences (33.7 MPG). His early-season production, headlined by a career-high in scoring, remains a testament to his growth and ability to thrive in a new system with a coach willing to maximize his potential. All of these\u2014among other factors\u2014are sound reasons why the Lakers refuse to give up Reaves in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sportsnaut.com\/los-angeles-lakers-rumors-austin-reaves-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How Rival Execs View Reaves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Reaves can do no harm in the eyes of Lakers coaches, execs and fans, other front offices have mixed emotions about him. ESPN\u2019s Dave McMenamin surveyed other NBA executives for their <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/42933812\/the-three-biggest-reasons-lebron-los-angeles-lakers-flailing-west\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoughts on the Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at this point in the season, which included several remarks about the fourth-year guard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Eastern Conference exec praised Reaves\u2019s effort and believes his teammates should &#8220;follow suit&#8221;:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;AD and LeBron need consistency from the rest of the group. The only guy that they rely on is Austin. He finally got to the point of not deferring to those guys. The rest of the group should follow suit. Too many guys don&#8217;t know how to play with them because they feel like they need to just give AD and LeBron the ball and wait for a pass. They end up forcing shots late-clock because that is when they get the ball.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Lakers received less-than-favorable remarks from a Western Conference exec:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If Austin Reaves is your third-best player &#8212; and I love Austin, I think he&#8217;s a very good basketball player &#8212; but if he&#8217;s your third-best player, you&#8217;re not a championship contender, you&#8217;re just not. If you put Austin Reaves on the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Boston Celtics, he&#8217;s probably the fifth-, maybe even sixth-best player, on those rosters.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers will need to get back to championship form soon, and it\u2019s clear they view Reaves as a key part of the puzzle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With several of LA\u2019s targets becoming available for trade this Sunday, the time is now for Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss to get serious about improving the roster via trades, primarily because <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/does-rob-pelinka-feel-lakers-roster-can-compete-for-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelinka\u2019s 30-game evaluation period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is almost up. Their stance on Reaves is laudable, as he would continue to excel in his role no matter who else joins the team.
