Sitting at 13-11 in a crowded\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/12\/11\/pelicans-team-watch-nba-trade-season-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Western Conference<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Lakers aren&#8217;t doing terrible, but they&#8217;re not doing <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">great<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> either. With trade rumors swirling the skies and the team under pressure to make moves now instead of later, is it so far off to hold the belief that the Lakers will not be championship contenders until\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has closed the curtains on his NBA career?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>LeBron James Has to Exit For Lakers to Build Again<\/h2>\n<h3>As Wild as it Sounds, A LeBron James Retirement Might Turn the Lakers Into Contenders<\/h3>\n<p>No GM or coach ever established the idea that having LeBron lead your team was akin to floating through the clouds. Quite the opposite, in fact\u2014the pressure is cranked. Even <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/spoeler99c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erik Spoelstra<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/luety01c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ty Lue<\/a> have admitted in the past that having the King on their team was an entirely different animal. Can he be blamed for that, though? His level of greatness carries higher expectations, and with higher expectations comes a different degree of standards. So, it&#8217;s not his fault.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The pressure now is on Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. It&#8217;s h<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ard t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">o tell if he&#8217;s handling it right. The Lakers have to do something between now and the trade deadline because as much as Redick loves to talk up\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;s stellar defense or\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jaxson Hayes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;s exuberant energy on the boards, this roster isn&#8217;t it. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LeBron knows this,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">likely knows this as well. Pelinka hasn&#8217;t made a roster-defining move via trade since Davis. To be championship contenders this year, he has to do that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gut<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> feeling speaking here, but this is the year that Pelinka <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">does<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> something significant.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> That being said, there should be no surprise if he does nothing. Nevertheless, no matter how the next few weeks or couple of months shake out in\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/12\/13\/los-angeles-lakers-interested-markelle-fultz\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Los Angeles<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as wild as it sounds, perhaps the Lakers best path forward to being contenders once again is not before LeBron retires but after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why the King&#8217;s Exit Paves the Way<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One particular NBA insider who thought it best to leave his credentials at the door recently shared his thoughts on the Lakers as contenders\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/los-angeles-lakers\/lakers-stuck-again-on-lebron-james-hamster-wheel\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and pointed to LeBron being the solution, sort of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cUntil LeBron leaves, it\u2019s not going to be a good job, you know? You\u2019re going to be held to a standard that isn\u2019t realistic. LeBron\u2019s almost 40, man, c\u2019mon. He can still do great things because he\u2019s freakin\u2019 LeBron. But in terms of getting that team to be good consistently for a period of years \u2014 a contender \u2014 it\u2019s not going to happen with how it\u2019s set up now. They took their shot these last couple of years, and it didn\u2019t work. They have to be honest. Two stars weren\u2019t enough with what they had around them. It wasn\u2019t a coaching thing. It almost never is.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One thing is sure: the Lakers can&#8217;t rely on LeBron to win the season for them. It&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">even<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0too much of an ask to rely on AD\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0LeBron\u2014the surrounding roster doesn&#8217;t cut it. If the Lakers continue the season with no trades or roster moves, it could be because they&#8217;re waiting LeBron out. A call like that is twofold. On one hand, it&#8217;s a slap to LeBron&#8217;s face. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the other<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it&#8217;s quite possibly the best business move for the team&#8217;s future.
