That was the headlining part of the trade and the part that basketball pundits spoke about. The details of the trade though included Murray to New Orleans with E.J. Liddell, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller, Dyson Daniels, and two first round picks heading to Atlanta.

The Pelicans struggles have been well-documented. Murray unfortunately got hurt in the season opener, and he has only appeared in five games. The Hawks certainly did not get a household name back in the deal. Daniels is trying to change that while becoming the first player to achieve a steals average that hasn’t been done in more than three decades.

Daniels On Pace To Accomplish Feat Not Done Since 1990-91

Steals Galore From Dyson Daniels

Now in his third season, Daniels has been in the Hawks starting lineup from the get-go. The shooting guard has appeared in 20 of Atlanta’s first 22 games, starting in all of them. Through his 20 outings, Daniels has 61 steals. That gives him an average of 3.05 per game.

There are still 60 games remaining in the regular season for the Hawks. Of course, a lot can change. Still, Daniels’ kleptomaniac ways have him on pace to accomplish something for the first time in over 30 years. Nobody has averaged at least three steals per contest since the 1990-91 season when Alvin Robertson of the Milwaukee Bucks did so by averaging 3.04. For 33 straight seasons, nobody has been able to reach that three-steal plateau.

The 21-year-old Daniels has at least one steal in 18 of his 20 outings. In the four games that Atlanta played from November 8 until November 15, Daniels totaled 25 steals. He has had multiple steals in 14 games and at least four in eight contests.

Having More Success Than He Did With New Orleans

The Pelicans selected Daniels with the eighth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Just 19 years old at the time of starting his NBA career, Daniels was unable to make the impact in his two seasons with New Orleans that he has thus far for the Hawks. He started 27 of 120 appearances over two seasons with the Pelicans averaging 4.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals. Those first three numbers are at 13.8, 5.2, 3.0 respectively with the Hawks.

Daniels also didn’t steal the ball at the rate he is with the Hawks, but he showed signs of improving in that area. Per 36 minutes, the Australian averaged 1.5 steals in 2022-23, increasing that number to 2.3 in 2023-24. That number has gone up to 3.3 this season.

Daniels Has Now Beaten His Former Team Twice

On Monday night, the Hawks defeated Daniels’ former team, the Pelicans, in Atlanta by the score of 124-112. Daniels finished with final numbers of 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Meanwhile in just his fifth game of the season, Murray struggled to the tune of a 2-15 shooting night. It was the second time that Daniels defeated the Pelicans this season, as the Hawks won in New Orleans 126-111 on November 3 (Murray did not play).

The Hawks have now won four straight and have the sixth-best record in the Eastern Conference at 11-11. They next play Wednesday in Milwaukee against the Bucks. Will Dyson Daniels continue picking up steals at an insane rate?

On July 6, the New Orleans Pelicans acquired Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks.
