Now, at 10-7 and coming off of their first loss in Emirates NBA Cup action, the team\u2019s needs are glaring. One insider reported they\u2019re looking at wings on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/11\/25\/lakers-analysis-in-trade-market\/\" target=\"_self\">trade market<\/a>, namely a defensive stopper from the Eastern Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Rumors: LA in &#8220;Constant Contact&#8221; About Nets Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Lakers Still Connected to Dorian Finney-Smith<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to ClutchPoints\u2019 Anthony Irwin, the Lakers have been eyeing Nets wing <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/finnedo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dorian Finney-Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a recent episode of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/i\/broadcasts\/1YqKDkyYLEExV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakers Lounge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which featured Bleacher Report\u2019s Jake Fischer, the issue of perimeter defense came up. Fischer noted how the Lakers were 27th in defensive rating at the time of recording, which is when Irwin brought up the Finney-Smith rumors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOn that front [perimeter defense], I know that the Lakers checked in on Dorian Finney-Smith last year, and they\u2019ve been in constant contact with Brooklyn about him.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also noted that sharpshooter <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsca02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another option, but added, \u201cHis asking price is, I think, kind of tough for the Lakers to match.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 14 games this season, Finney-Smith is averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists on .466\/.410\/.611 splits. He\u2019s in his ninth season in the NBA, having gone <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/nets\/news\/dorian-finney-smiths-nba-journey-from-undrafted-to-vital-role-player\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undrafted in 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before spending nearly seven seasons with the Mavericks and the last three with the Nets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How DFS Could Help the Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finney-Smith has made a name for himself as a solid offensive player, though his bread and butter is on the defensive end of the floor. He has averaged 0.9 steals and 0.6 blocks per game this season, and 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks for his career. At 6\u20197\u201d and 220 pounds, Finney-Smith has become a versatile ball stopper in the frontcourt. Helping LA\u2019s frontcourt defense is even more vital considering the prolonged absence of forward <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Sam Vecenie <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Baldmojito\/status\/1859624590244205016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought Finney-Smith up in an interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Jovan Buha last week. He wanted the Lakers to find \u201cas many minutes as humanly possible\u201d for a group of James, Davis, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalton Knecht<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while acquiring a defensive-minded player via trade:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I was the Lakers front office, I would be going out on the trade market to try to find my defensive answer. Try to find my high-level perimeter defender who I can also trust to knock down shots within the scope of this offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd they have the picks to do it, they have the contracts to be able to do it. It shouldn\u2019t be an issue for them, given what\u2019s gonna be out on the marketplace. My favorite name is Dorian Finney-Smith for them. That just makes an immense amount of sense to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finney-Smith has proven his worth as a reliable 3-and-D starter in any situation, particularly as an option on a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=dorian+finney-smith+career+playoff+stats\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legitimate playoff contender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The fact that he\u2019s making $14.9 million this season (with a $15.3M player option for next year) and is stuck on a rebuilding Nets team should entice the Lakers to make a move. If they\u2019re not finding success in getting centers via trade, they should move on to wings and get someone who would fit in seamlessly.
