Last season, the Alabama product helped lead the Celtics to the G League Finals while averaging 20.8 points, 8.6 assists, and 5.4 rebounds he was named to the All-NBA G League third team. With his strong start to the season, Davison could be in line for a first or second team selection. His 11.7 assists lead the G League if Davison continues this stellar play, he could even be an MVP candidate. Additionally, like last season, the Celtics are one of the most talented teams in the league. Alongside Davison, Celtics first-round pick Baylor Scheierman, second-round pick Anton Watson, Drew Peterson, Ron Harper Jr., and Dmytro Skapintsev form one of the most complete rosters in the G League. Maine’s success could lead Davison to more individual awards.

Will Davison Get a Shot With Boston?

It’s worth wondering if Davison’s incredible play will result in him getting more opportunities with Boston. Despite his consistent play in the G League, Davison has only appeared in a total of 23 games over the past three years. In his rookie year, Davison played in 12 games last season he played in eight, and so far this season, he has played in three. Considering the Celtics loaded guard rotation, with Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard, it’s unlikely the 2022 second-round pick will get real minutes this season or his contract converted to a standard deal. However, it’s likely that he’ll appear in more than 12 games.

Davison’s play in the G League should earn him more opportunities in blowout situations for the Celtics. Furthermore, if the Celtics are dealing with injuries, especially to guards, Davison could fill in and give them some rotational minutes. At 22, Davison still has plenty of upside and deserves a chance to showcase his skill set at the NBA level. As a playmaker and shot-creating finisher, Davison could have a quality impact on the right team. Unfortunately, the Celtics’ roster feels too loaded for Davison to get a real chance. Davison is a restricted free agent in the 2025 offseason he will likely land a standard contract, either from the Celtics or another team.

For the past three years, JD Davison has been a two-way player for the Celtics, splitting his time between Boston and Maine.
