They&#8217;re not in the championship-contesting atmosphere yet, but they are in the playoff-contesting one\u2014or so they should be, anyway. They&#8217;re off to a great start to the season, and as far as holding on to trade pieces, the Rockets are shutting the doors on some of their younger stars.<\/p>\n<h2>Rockets Designate Two Young Guns Untouchable For Trade<\/h2>\n<h3>Rockets&#8217; Tari Eason and Amen Thompson &#8216;Off Limits&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When you hear &#8220;trust the process,&#8221; you think of the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/11\/12\/76ers-have-no-choice-to-turn-season-around-per-nba-analyst\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joel Embiid<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Has that process worked out? That&#8217;s heavily debatable, with opinions falling on both sides. When I hear &#8220;process,&#8221; I think of the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/11\/15\/jalen-williams-solving-thunders-holmgren-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oklahoma City Thunder<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. With OKC, trusting the process is paying dividends, whereas the 76ers are arguably stuck as a franchise. With the Thunder, you have a team built by the draft and genius of Sam Presti (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, anyone?). Look at where they are now. Could the Houston Rockets follow in OKC&#8217;s footsteps? They can, and they should.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/insider\/story\/_\/id\/42400032\/nba-buzz-cavs-playoff-plans-warriors-rockets-trade-intel\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to ESPN senior NBA writer Brian Windhorst<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Rockets are informing teams that they are staying out of the business of trading away their young talent in place of a superstar or other. At least, that is the case for now. The talent in question belongs to the Rockets&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/easonta01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tari Eason<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompam01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Amen Thompson<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Houston&#8217;s respective 2022 and 2023 draft selections.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;the message they are sending out is that they aren&#8217;t interested in trading much of their young core right now. Draft steal Tari Eason, for example, has been drawing attention for the past year but has been labeled off limits, sources said. Same for last year&#8217;s lottery pick Amen Thompson.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Windhorst further explained that Rockets GM Rafael Stone prioritizes going after defenders in the draft or free agency. He listed\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanvlfr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fred VanVleet<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookdi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dillon Brooks<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as examples. Stone appears to be taking a page out of Thunder GM Presti&#8217;s book. The next step is to trust the <em>process<\/em>\u00a0that Presti has and is doing with the Thunder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Impressive Drafting Similar to OKC<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Building the Rockets heavily via the draft appears to be an organization staple. Apart from Thompson and Eason,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jalen Green<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jabari Smith Jr<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitmca01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cam Whitmore<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sengual01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alperen \u015eeng\u00fcn<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, by way of the Oklahoma City Thunder, have all been<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/basketball.realgm.com\/nba\/teams\/Houston-Rockets\/10\/draft-history\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">selected by Houston over the last four years<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. That goes to show that they&#8217;re invested in the draft, and each of those names are living up to their pick thus far. Last season, Houston missed the play-in by one seed, finishing five wins behind the Golden State Warriors. This season, they&#8217;re off to an 8-4 start with a chance to improve to nine wins over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/u\/udokaim01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ime Udoka<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has emerged as the perfect coach for this young\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/11\/12\/should-rockets-bench-jabari-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rockets<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0team, and this core only continues to grow and excel with one another. For this reason and others, the Rockets should be determined to follow the path the Thunder have taken. That path includes developing the young players\u2014Thompson, Green, Eason, \u015eeng\u00fcn, Smith Jr., and others\u2014in the process of building a team that can contend for a championship. Because that&#8217;s where the Thunder are right now, and they&#8217;re not going away as contenders. Houston can replicate that. Making players such as Thompson and Eason unavailable in trades is the intelligent way to play this.
