The team faced the Suns, Cavaliers, Raptors, Pistons and Grizzlies, their lone win coming against Toronto by six points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite LA&#8217;s frustrating losses, last night\u2019s game against the Grizzlies was a tipping point of sorts. A second-half collapse led to the Lakers&#8217; 131-114 loss. The team&#8217;s rough play clearly made headlines, but so did a controversial decision by head coach <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/redicjj01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JJ Redick<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>JJ Redick Explains Decision to Bench Lakers Starter<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Redick Pulls D\u2019Angelo Russell vs. Grizzlies<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick sensed a necessary change as the Lakers trailed by 12 midway through the third quarter Wednesday. That change involved subbing out starting guard <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It proved the end of Russell&#8217;s night, as he finished with 12 points (4\/12 FG, 2\/9 3PT, 2\/2 FT), three assists, two steals and a rebound in 22 minutes\u2014the fewest by any Lakers starter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his postgame press conference, Redick <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DStarkand\/status\/1854369659010626000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why Russell was moved to the bench in the second half.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLevel of compete. Attention to detail. Some of the things we&#8217;ve talked with him about a couple of weeks. At times he&#8217;s been really good, other times it&#8217;s just reverting to certain habits. It wasn&#8217;t like a punishment, but for us to have a chance to win this game, that was the route we wanted to take. Gabe in the first half, especially defensively, was fantastic. I just wanted to see what that looked like.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vincent, though effective as a point-of-attack defender, logged six points (2\/8 FG, 1\/6 3PT), one rebound and one assist in 23 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is Russell\u2019s Benching a Sign?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell has looked shaky to start his tenth NBA season. Across LA\u2019s eight games, he has averaged 12 points, 5.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds while shooting 37% from the field and 29% from three. It may be too early to judge, but it\u2019s also apparent that he has looked out of place with this year\u2019s groups under Redick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of Redick, he has clearly brought some fresh air into the Lakers culture, taking the team\u2019s losing skid seriously\u2014even ending last night\u2019s press conference earlier than expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Not even 10 games into the season and JJ Redick is already storming out of postgame press conferences <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WUsNg3KPY6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/WUsNg3KPY6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mark Jackson\u2019s Burner (@casualtakeking) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/casualtakeking\/status\/1854407858571337807?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">November 7, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell\u2019s benching and Redick&#8217;s explanation is a sign of true accountability under new leadership. It\u2019s a departure from what Redick said over the summer\u2014when he proclaimed <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-news-jj-redick-clarifies-what-career-year-looks-like-for-dangelo-russell\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell could have a \u201ccareer year\u201d this season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014but, at the same time, being benched and held responsible for mistakes is a necessary step in that process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 next few opponents are a mix of playoff-caliber and lottery-bound teams. Over the next week, they face the 76ers, Raptors, Grizzlies and the Spurs (as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/08\/14\/lakers-news-road-to-defending-nba-cup-trophy-revealed\/\" target=\"_self\">Emirates NBA Cup<\/a>). Several of those matchups feature strong facilitators in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maxeyty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyrese Maxey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moranja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ja Morant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Paul<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014all of whom Russell is expected to guard (in Morant\u2019s case, for the second time). Russell must use the recent demotion as fuel toward improvement. He has shown he can be a key part of the Lakers\u2019 success. Now, it&#8217;s his time to prove it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Starting Backcourt Change?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/LAL\/2025_start.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not deviate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/25\/lakers-news-jj-redick-reveals-starting-lineup-lebron-james-anthony-davis\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chosen starting lineup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until injuries to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forced his hand. There&#8217;s no indication he intends on splitting Russell and Reaves. However, he could make tougher calls to get the Lakers back on track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s hard to make that change when the Lakers\u2019 reserves are also underperforming. Vincent going from backup to starter doesn\u2019t seem like the right answer, considering his own poor production. The team could shift Reaves to point guard instead of his natural shooting guard, but that would leave a hole that can\u2019t be filled by <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddica01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Reddish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Christie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalton Knecht<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example. The possibility of Russell being benched early <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/4\/30\/24145103\/lakers-dangelo-russell-austin-reaves-darvin-ham-bench-reaction-locker-room-nba-offseason\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the second consecutive season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wouldn\u2019t sit right with fans or teammates, either, regardless of the fact <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=lakers+record+when+d%27angelo+russell+came+off+the+bench+2023-24\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they went 4-3 in those situations last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That leaves Russell and the rest of the Lakers forced to toughen up and face early adversity head-on. A significant shift in the starting five could still be in order, but it doesn\u2019t make sense right now. Russell and the supporting cast must elevate their play to lift the Lakers above .500. The responsibility also falls on the shoulders of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose leadership off the court is just as important as their play on it.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a promising start, the Los Angeles Lakers fell back to earth during their four-game road trip.
