Even with a 4-2 start, GM Rob Pelinka is searching for players who fit the Lakers\u2019 identity and other teams who are willing to trade with them. That second part may have gotten easier with new intel about a current Laker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lakers Rumors: Former First-Round Pick Garnering Trade Interest<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Teams Looking at Second-Year Laker<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Bleacher Report\u2019s Jake Fischer, several teams are interested in Lakers guard <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoodsja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jalen Hood-Schifino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who the team drafted 17th overall in 2023. Fischer <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/los-angeles-lakers\/jalen-hood-schifino-drawing-trade-interest\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared details<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during his \u201cNBA Insider Notebook\u201d livestream on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will be playing in the G League this year, and he\u2019ll have plenty of opportunity to showcase himself, both in the G League in general and at the G League showcase when the entire league descends upon Orlando in December. Atlanta had an interest in him in that talk with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/dejounte-murray\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dejounte Murray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year. Utah, I believe, has shown interest in him.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FanDuel Sportsbook NBA insider Jakoba Reynolds doubled down on Utah\u2019s rumored interest, calling them \u201ca strong suitor\u201d for Hood-Schifino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakobaReynolds\/status\/1852790380162428973<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news comes days after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/31\/was-lakers-jalen-hood-schifino-contract-decision-right-choice\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakers declined Hood-Schifino\u2019s $4 million team option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the 2025-26 season. According to ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania, the decision was a cost-cutting move by LA that\u00a0<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/42114253\/sources-lakers-decline-3rd-year-option-jalen-hood-schifino\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ccreates roster flexibility\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heading into the 2025 offseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is Moving on the Right Decision?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the Lakers haven\u2019t technically put anyone on the trade block, Hood-Schifino would logically be one of the first players to be there. The Indiana product came into the league with flashes of potential as a 6\u20196\u201d floor general. He averaged 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Hoosiers in his lone year with the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon joining the Lakers, many expected Hood-Schifino to develop into a rotation player who could add depth at the point guard slot. However, a knee injury sidelined him for much of his rookie year. And when he was on the floor, he was very inefficient. JHS averaged 1.6 points (22% FG), 0.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists across 21 games. He last played on Mar. 6, a couple weeks before he <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2024\/3\/21\/24108169\/jalen-hood-schifino-lakers-injury-report-back-lumbar-microdiscectomy-surgery\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underwent season-ending back surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Lakers basically all set at point guard\u2014headlined by <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, occasionally <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and possibly <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesbr02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronny James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the team is right to move on from Hood-Schifino, giving him a necessary change of scenery that could benefit him and his career. Whether it\u2019s Atlanta, Utah, or any other team, Hood-Schifino could make an impact as a talented scorer and intelligent facilitator.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>G League Can Help JHS\u2019s Case<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though JHS has been unable to compete in the NBA, he had a very productive season for the G League\u2019s South Bay Lakers. In 15 games, he put up 22 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists on .473\/.432\/.800 splits. His best game was a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3LPrfQbnTuc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38-point outburst against the Austin Spurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he drilled a career-high five three-pointers. As Fischer mentioned, Hood-Schifino should find similar success this season now that he\u2019s healthy, a key component in rival GMs drawing interest in the 21-year-old and his availability as a possible trade piece and pending free agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Not All Hope Lost<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all the doubt and newfound trade talks, head coach JJ Redick has <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jj-redick-lakers-havent-given-up-on-jalen-hood-schifino\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reiterated his belief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the second-year point guard.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">JJ Redick on JHS: \u201cI still believe in Jalen. We haven\u2019t given up on him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Redick notes that the Lakers wanted more flexibility for next offseason.
