His new annual pay is in line with that of other superstars such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steph Curry<\/a><\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/07\/01\/stephen-curry-agrees-re-sign-warriors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">re-signed with<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/golden-state-warriors\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden State Warriors<\/a> on a similar contract this past summer. Including the $28 million that Westbrook is set to make this season, his deal is now worth $233 million over six years \u2013 the most lucrative total contract in NBA history,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wojespn\/status\/913845317115744257\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">per Wojnarowski<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Uncertainty Settled<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a><\/strong> left the Thunder in 2016 free agency, questions arose as to whether Westbrook would want to remain with the team. Westbrook quickly settled that debate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/17220556\/russell-westbrook-signs-contract-extension-oklahoma-city-thunder\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signing a two-year contract extension<\/a> last summer, but that deal gave him the option to become a free agent in 2018. With the Thunder&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/09\/23\/knicks-trade-carmelo-anthony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/06\/30\/indiana-pacers-trade-paul-george\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquisitions\u00a0<\/a>of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/georgpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul George<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carmelo Anthony<\/a><\/strong>, all three were set to become free agents this summer, creating even more uncertainty in Oklahoma City. However, Westbrook must have felt reassured by the front office&#8217;s decisions, and he has now ended any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakersnation.com\/nba-rumors-thunder-star-russell-westbrook-yet-to-sign-extension-as-deadline-looms\/2017\/08\/24\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speculation that he may want to play in his hometown<\/a>, possibly alongside George or another superstar.<\/p>\n<p>Just like how <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wojespn\/status\/911639426249486336?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George and Westbrook reportedly played a part<\/a> in getting Anthony to waive his no-trade clause, Westbrook&#8217;s long-term commitment to the Thunder could influence the other stars <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/2017\/07\/19\/oklahoma-city-thunder-paul-george\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to stay in OKC beyond the 2017-18 season<\/a>. For now, the three are just looking to make their mark and compete for a championship in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Westbrook,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/08\/03\/the-case-for-russell-westbrooks-mvp-repeat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reigning MVP<\/a>, will be 34 years old by the end of his new contract. The Seattle Supersonics selected Westbrook with the fourth pick of the 2008 NBA Draft. They promptly moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder starting the following season. Since then, Westbrook has played his whole career in OKC, representing the entirety of the Thunder&#8217;s franchise history.
