{"id":103121,"date":"2024-10-25T15:16:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T19:16:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=103121"},"modified":"2024-10-25T15:16:04","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T19:16:04","slug":"lakers-rumors-la-linked-to-rival-sharpshooter-santi-aldama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/25\/lakers-rumors-la-linked-to-rival-sharpshooter-santi-aldama\/","title":{"rendered":"Lakers Rumors: LA Linked to Rival Sharpshooter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 season may have just begun, but it\u2019s never too early to begin looking at free agency, especially considering the players who did not sign long-term rookie-scale extensions. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10140375-flight-risk-meter-for-top-10-2025-rookie-scale-restricted-free-agents\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleacher Report\u2019s Eric Pincus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailed ten players from the 2021 draft class who could enter restricted free agency, as well as their predicted contract size and landing spots. Among those is a young forward the Lakers could have interest in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lakers Rumors: LA Linked to Rival Sharpshooter<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Possible Suitors for Grizzlies First-Round Pick<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers were mentioned as a possible landing spot for Grizzlies forward <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aldamsa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Santi Aldama<\/a>, a 23-year-old looking to build off of a strong start to his career. Aldama <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Z-N07DF58aQ?si=HMFcwCPxDaUpS79D\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke out in Memphis\u2019s season opener<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, going for 27 points, five rebounds and two assists in a 126-124 win over the Jazz. He shot 10\/16 from the field, 5\/10 from three and made both of his free-throw attempts. In evaluating Aldama, Pincus wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSanti Aldama has legit height at 7&#8217;0&#8243; but is more of an offensive option than a defensive anchor. He can spread the floor but needs to improve his accuracy (34.9 percent from three last year).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He&#8217;s played significant minutes for the injury-ravaged Grizzlies and could stay longer despite the crowded frontcourt (Zach Edey, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most teams potentially interested in Aldama would have up to the $14.1 million projected non-taxpayer mid-level exception.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season, Aldama appeared in 61 games (35 starts) for Memphis. He averaged 10.7 points (.435\/.349\/.621 splits), 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 26.5 minutes per game. Aldama is also coming off of a strong summer where he <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/thegreyhound.org\/16500\/sports\/introducing-santi-aldama-loyola-marylands-first-olympian\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">played for the Spanish national team in the Paris Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and won MVP of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding next summer, Pincus predicted Aldama will receive a contract of three years and $40 million. Other potential suitors include the Nets, Bulls, Warriors and Pacers in addition to a return to Memphis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Aldama\u2019s Game is Perfect for Redick\u2019s Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, Aldama displayed a knack for scoring at all three levels, but was particularly impressive with his catch-and-shoot threes. Even with power forwards continually adapting and spacing the floor, it\u2019s not every day you find a legit 7-footer with that smooth of a jumper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aldama has a perfect blend of size and shooting that would benefit the Lakers, skills that would be key next to LA\u2019s superstars. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014who had his own breakout performance in LA\u2019s season opener\u2014has proven he can thrive as the focus of JJ Redick\u2019s system, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is showing no signs of slowing down in a historic year 22. But outside of those two and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team\u2019s frontcourt still needs to improve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what happens this season, Aldama is a worthy target to pursue next summer. He\u2019s a great floor-spacing big who would fit right into Redick\u2019s philosophy of generating (and connecting on) more three-point attempts. His ability to crash the glass, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/basketball\/news\/grizzlies-santi-aldama-strong-finish-to-preseason\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evident more so in preseason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is an added bonus. By putting up such excellent numbers this early in his career, Aldama has not only exceeded expectations but put himself on the radar of many contenders. The Lakers, at the very least, should throw their hats in the ring for Aldama when the time comes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Not Trade for Him Now?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Aldama already showing tremendous growth amid a logjam up front, fans may be asking why the Lakers aren\u2019t adding him to this year\u2019s wishlist of trade targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10108646-rob-pelinka-on-lakers-quiet-trade-deadline-cant-buy-a-house-thats-not-for-sale\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GM Rob Pelinka once said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cYou can\u2019t buy a house that\u2019s not for sale.\u201d The Grizzlies have no intention of moving on from Aldama, and head coach Taylor Jenkins is inclined to find opportunities for him behind <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014currently nursing a hamstring injury\u2014and top-ten pick <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edeyza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zach Edey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014beginning his career as an NBA starter. Jenkins raved about Aldama Wednesday night, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/nba\/all-grizzlies\/grizzlies-coach-on-santi-aldamas-immense-upside\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telling reporters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we&#8217;re fully healthy and all that stuff, I think he can still make an extreme impact in a lot of different positions. I keep telling him just to be a man on a mission out there. He had two great summers in back-to-back years. The national team experience has really given him a boost of confidence\u2026He&#8217;s up for the task going into his fourth year. I think he&#8217;s learned a lot and understands the impact that he can have. We&#8217;re going to keep challenging him to do that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, it seems any hopes of the Lakers\u2014or any other team\u2014trading for Aldama are off the table. However, LA shouldn\u2019t abandon the idea completely. Having <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/contracts\/LAL.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several contracts off the books next offseason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaxson Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddica01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Reddish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) should open the door for the Lakers to make a run at Aldama, which they should seriously consider doing if they want to put Redick, James and Davis in an even better position to succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lakers\u2019 season may have just begun, but it\u2019s never too early to begin looking at free agency, especially considering the players who did not sign long-term rookie-scale extensions.
