Kuminga, the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/22\/2024-25-nba-mvp-odds-can-this-warriors-star-win-the-mvp\/\" target=\"_self\">Warriors<\/a>, has shown high upside and potential during his first three seasons. The Warriors other 2021 draft pick, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moodymo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moses Moody<\/a>, agreed to a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/20\/warriors-agree-contract-extension-2021-lottery-pick-moses-moody\/\" target=\"_self\">3-year, $39 million extension<\/a>. Kuminga and the Warriors were unable to agree on a contract extension before the start of the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/03\/2024-25-nba-betting-preview-new-york-knicks-win-total-odds\/\" target=\"_self\"> 2024-25 NBA season<\/a>, allowing for the forward to enter restricted free agency next summer. Reporters asked Kuminga about his contract negotiations after their win on Wednesday, and the forward made all the right comments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Warriors Forward Comments On Not Signing Contract Extension<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Warriors Win in Portland<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Warriors beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/10\/2024-25-nba-betting-previewtrail-blazers-win-total-odds\/\" target=\"_self\">Portland Trail Blazers<\/a> to kick off their season on Wednesday, 140-104. Coach <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kerrst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Kerr<\/a> deployed a 12-man rotation during the game, with no player playing more than 25 minutes. New Warriors like <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hieldbu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buddy Hield<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/meltode01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">De\u2019Anthony Melton<\/a> looked great in their Warriors debut, as did Moody, fresh off a new contract. He scored 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting and 0-of-2 from three-point range. Kuminga was the only player on the Warriors who didn\u2019t have a positive +\/- in the game (it was zero).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Kuminga Contract Comments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the game, Kuminga was asked about his contract negotiations and how he felt about not getting an extension signed over the offseason. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He told the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5868651\/2024\/10\/24\/warriors-steve-kerr-12-man-rotation-depth\/?source=emp_shared_article\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Athletic,<\/a> \u201cI\u2019m not really concerned about it. I\u2019m just concerned about coming out here and performing every other day. I ain\u2019t really thinking about that. The time came and nothing happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Kuminga seems unconcerned about not getting a deal done, he is taking a risk by betting on himself this season. It is no secret that Kuminga has thought of himself as a star-level talent, but the Warriors coaching staff has not always agreed. During his first few seasons with the team, there have been multiple instances of Kuminga, coach Steve Kerr, and the Warriors front office not all seeing eye-to-eye on Kuminga\u2019s role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Kuminga Contract Negotiations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN reporter <a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10140573-nba-rumors-jonathan-kuminga-warriors-were-never-close-on-contract-extension\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Windhorst recently said<\/a> the Warriors and Kuminga were \u201cnever close\u201d on their contract negotiations. Kuminga was allegedly looking for an extension that would pay him more than $30 million per year. It wasn\u2019t until his third season in the league that he even averaged over 10 points per game. Last year, he averaged 16.1 points and 4.8 rebounds on 52.9% shooting from the field in 26.3 minutes per game. One of Kuminga\u2019s draft class peers, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Green<\/a>, recently signed a $35 million per year rookie-scale extension. Green is averaging 19.8 points per game over his first three seasons with the Rockets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kuminga has shown flashes of why he could be worth over $30 million per year, but he has yet to put a complete season together of consistent quality offensive play and solid defense.
