The New York Knicks waived the traveled shooting guard Shamet after he played in four preseason games but unfortunately suffered a shoulder injury to end the week. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the roster move on the Knicks part doesn’t necessarily mean Shamet will not return to the team, provided he recovers from his dislocated shoulder.

The former 76ers draft pick played well in the preseason. He averaged 10.8 points in four games and impressed the coaching staff. He was initially signed to an Exhibit 9 deal earlier in the summer. And if kept on the team, he was likely set to start the regular season off the bench. However, due to his shoulder mishap, that no longer plays in the cards for him. If he does play for the Knicks, it will be later in the season.

Hopefully, Shamet’s shoulder will heal properly so he can return to the floor and continue his NBA career.

Well Travelled in Six Seasons

Coming into the league in 2018, Shamet split the season in Philadelphia and Los Angeles for the Clippers, having a strong rookie year. However, after the 2019-20 season, Shemet bounced from team to team and couldn’t stay put. After the Clippers, he spent time with the Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns, and last season with the Washington Wizards. Last season was his first to average less than 20 minutes per game, and he experienced career lows in points (7.1), assists (1.3), and three-point shooting (33.8%). That last statistic is a far cry from his rookie year when he shot 40.4% with the Sixers and 45% with the Clippers. He has yet to reach 40% since then.

What likely hasn’t aided him are the injuries that have taken away his playing time in the last two seasons. In the 2022-23 season, his last in Phoenix, he played in just 40 games. Last season, in Washington, he played in 46, missing the final 18 games of the season.

It would bode well for Shamet if he could return to New York. The type of offense and overall game the Knicks play to fit with Shamet’s game. His career average from three is still high at 38.4%, which any team could use.
