This record officially crowned them the worst team in Washington Wizards history. They hadn\u2019t won under 20 games since the 2008-2009 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/WAS\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">season<\/a>, another season worth forgetting. They made a big swing trading for <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poolejo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Poole<\/a> in the offseason, and the results were mixed. Poole showed flashes of his offensive brilliance during his time with the Warriors. He also showed that he likely won\u2019t be able to lead a team to the NBA playoffs. Even with a much larger role than the previous season, Poole averaged three fewer points per game than the previous year and saw his field goal and shooting percentages drop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Marvin Bagley III says Bilal Coulibaly is \u201cnight and day\u201d from where he was when Bagley arrived in January of last season. Says his aggression and confidence levels have rose tremendously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever he did in the summertime, you can definitely tell the work is paying off.\u201d <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EeYImqH2of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/EeYImqH2of<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bijan Todd (@bijan_todd) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bijan_todd\/status\/1846250528231030829?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The positive sides of last season were <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuzmaky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Kuzma<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/avdijde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deni Avdija<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/coulibi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bilal Coulibaly<\/a>. Kuzma averaged 22.2 points and continues to be a valuable trade chip. Avdija did the same and got traded this offseason to the Portland Trail Blazers. Coulibaly was the youngest Wizard to ever start a game for the franchise before his season-ending injury; he showed promise as a rookie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Incoming Veteran Presence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being the second-worst team in the league last season landed the Wizards the second overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft. They took a gamble and drafted <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sarral01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexandre Sarr<\/a>. Sarr will take some time to develop, but he has an interesting upside for a Wizards team that is desperate for a star.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To balance the current and incoming youth, the Wizards picked up two key veterans. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brogdma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Brogdon<\/a>, a solid veteran ball handler, was part of the return for the Avdija trade. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valanjo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonas Valanciunas<\/a> was acquired in a sign and trade as well. Going over this line would be a six-win improvement from last season. Valanciunas and Brogdon will help improve the team, but developing rookie Sarr and young players like Coulibaly could make things difficult. A bounce-back season from Poole could also help the Wizards season immensely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wizards have gone under their projected win total in both of the last two seasons. Winning 21 games in the Eastern Conference shouldn\u2019t be that hard.
