As the OKC-SAS Western Conference Finals series brews hot, many storylines are starting to enter the scene. From Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama‘s young rivalry, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s recent sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers, and the San Antonio Spurs’ impressive playoff run, one bigger talking point has now surfaced. Fresh off winning his second NBA MVP award, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has a bigger motivation to play his best in the Thunder-Spurs WCF showdown.
As the first guard to win back-to-back MVPs since Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry in 2015 and 2016, SGA’s greatest hits tour reaches a challenging pit stop. This date with destiny against the Spurs has been anticipated ever since the season began. Now that he’s been named the MVP once more, it goes without saying that the stakes have become much bigger for the best player in the league.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP Win Raises Stakes In Thunder-Spurs Clash
Oklahoma City facing San Antonio in a playoff series has been a long time coming. And, with each of the previous series having been more intense than the last, it cannot be denied that high expectations are heading into this one. After all, there’s no dull game when you have the reigning MVP on the court.
Losing Is Not An Option
Not only is Gilgeous-Alexander the first guard to win back-to-back MVP awards since Curry, he’s the first player to win the NBA MVP Award back-to-back since Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic in 2021 and 2022. With company like that, the pressure is on SGA to prove that he has what it takes to win. Of course, he’d already proven that last year when he won MVP and a championship in the same season, which says a lot about his worth as a rising icon in the league. However, this showdown against the Spurs poses a serious threat to his career.
Criticism is harsh, and we’ve seen Gilgeous-Alexander already rise to the same level as Los Angeles Lakers megastar LeBron James, Chicago Bulls icon Michael Jordan, and late Lakers legend Kobe Bryant in that regard. If anything, losing to San Antonio in the biggest stage of the Western Conference is going to be a huge blow to his growing legacy. Lose the series in any number of games, and SGA’s going to get criticized a lot, no matter what.

In fact, with the announcement of his second MVP in a row coming so close to the start of the 2026 Western Conference Finals, there’s no way this wouldn’t give the Spurs additional motivation to play well in the series. On the other hand, this should help OKC come up with more confidence, knowing they’re going up against their opponents with the league MVP.
SGA’s Biggest Challenge Comes At The Right Time
As Oklahoma City plowed through the Lakers and Phoenix Suns in back-to-back sweeps, it is easy to say that this Thunder-Spurs showdown would be the real test for the defending champs. In fact, Game 4 against the Lakers was the closest game they’ve played for the whole postseason. That’s how dominant OKC has been so far.
But going against a Spurs team that has gone 4-1 against them in the season is a different test. They’ve struggled hard to play against San Antonio with all of their starters. The only difference is that SGA now has a reliable shooter in Jared McCain, whom San Antonio hasn’t played against.
The Spurs may be a bit familiar with Ajay Mitchell, but certainly not Playoff Mitchell. The OKC guard has been quite impressive in his games in the postseason so far, especially with Jalen Williams only returning in the WCF from his hamstring injury. If anything, Gilgeous-Alexander has a lot of improved and sharpened weapons by his side to help him in his biggest challenge yet.
A Legacy Series For Gilgeous-Alexander
In the Thunder’s championship run, Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t dodge the smoke. He went head-to-head against the Nuggets and Jokic, last season’s MVP runner-up. Of course, that series was definitely stressful for OKC fans, as they went down 2-1 at one point. Eventually, Oklahoma City went on to win Game 7 in dominant fashion.
Now he’s facing the same challenge. He’s going up against another MVP candidate for this year in Wembanyama and a raging Spurs team. Whether this goes up to seven games or less, SGA has a bigger fight in his hands now more than ever.

Winning will put him close to joining an elite company, with the likes of James, Jordan, and Hall of Fame center Bill Russell as the only players to win titles and season MVP in back-to-back seasons. This is a huge hurdle that Gilgeous-Alexander will have to overcome in the coming weeks.
